You're right, there is no formula - so how are Watford getting to £1.8m? It's not like he's 22 and come from their academy. He's 29, ffs.

Sidwell left on a free and clubs knew the situation. Why pay when you can get him for nothing later? No doubt the club probably did have sniffs at around 500k and we said no. We took that risk and Chelsea took that risk because Sidwell was young enough to wait for.

Smith is different as he has NO re-sale realistic value (for us) beyond his current contract. Unless a player is in the very top flight, paying nigh on £2m for Smith is just plain madness but obviously we have no other targets.

Why do you think players get their contracts renegotiated when it comes to (about) 18months left? To increase their value! In my opinion we are only paying this much because Watford know we want him badly. They are rightly holding out for as much as they can get, doesn't mean we should pay it...but we're forced to.

We are not buying a contract - we are buying a player who, to us, appears to be worth £1.8m.

The length of the existing contract is very relevant to the seller, but not especially to the buyer.

I'll have to agree to disagree...otherwise, there's no point in contracts just arbitrary values. How much should Smith be worth in January? Still £1.8m? No.

If he signs and he scores 10+ goals before january I would suspect he would be worth atleast £1.8m

It's no difference to any other kind of commerce across the world for any kind of product - something is only worth what someone else is prepared to pay for it.

Watford hold all the aces in these negotiation. They have him and we want him now - not at the end of the season! So we have to weight up the cost to us of not getting him this August and decide if that matches Watford's valuation. His contract value is irrelevant.

We did make it somewhat easier for Watford to play hardball by handing ou the impression that it was Smith or noone for us.

And also by publicly announcing that we were talking to the player about a move. ... naive stuff!

Watford's goals against Forest are on the BBC site if anyone's interested in seeing Tommy Smith's contribution http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... 210217.stm

Interesting that he only seemed to get involved with the celebrations for his own goal

Equally does he want to be at a club that thinks he isnt worth that much?? and have grudgingly had to pay more than they really want to?? - if Sheffield was down South , he'd be there now!

Only if he was stupid. Most people would know that a club want to pay as little as possible for someone, it doesn't mean they rate/value you less.

Nope - if BR was manager of Sheffield, he'd be there now!

Good thing is even tho he wants out as did shunt but unlike shunt he puts in effort whilst hes still there... Looks like hes a professional

Im not so sure that BR has that much of a hold on Smith ... the important point to Smith is that he wants to stay South for family reasons, not necessarily lick Rodgers arse!

Id also expect Watford to accept the £1.8m bid but want it in one sum upfront - cant blame them
