SPARTA Esteban Guillem Balague is more reliable though and seems to back this up.
We've got to do something big one day.
Another fan that see's a transfer fee as the only sign of ambition. What about signing someone on a free, coughing up around 2m in signing on fee, seven figures for the agent fee, then around 55k a week wages? That's the deal I've heard Pogrebnyak is on, plus extras (
doesn't make it true of course), and Ady Williams is certain it's 60k. That's £6m this season alone. But maybe we'll do something 'big' one day.
Esteban's comment is very reasonable.
True a big signing is not the only sign of ambition. We've shown a steady, sensible, if somewhat irritatingly cautious ambition over the past few years, but it's still ambition and I'm happy with that. Pog is a big signing. We have ambition. All is good.
But ambition isn't black and white is it? There are levels. Buying someone doesn't mean they play for free. They still have wages! Getting someone on a free and £2-3million in setup costs Plus wages is not quite the same as targetting a man who is cost over £8million AT THE OUTSET, PLUS (perhaps a smaller) signing on fee, and agents fee but still with just as large wages (most likely) is obviously several million pounds more! And clearly therefore MORE of a sign of ambition than looking around for whoever is free and going for them.
Of course I agree with you it's not the only sign of ambition and I understand and agree with the good point you're making but it does take it up a level and seeing as we are yet to do anything that big, this is a quantum leap forward in terms of our ambition, or at least perceived ambition.
Even if we end up not getting him, if this is true it definitely signals to me a higher level of ambition than I had previously given Anton credit for.
I'm very excited by this whether he comes to us or not.
Well done for finally getting some balls, RFC.
