Perhaps we have been spoiled by the decent strikers we've had over the past 10 years. I would take any one of Kitson, Doyle, Long, Lita, Roberts (in their prime) over Murray. I'm not sure about Le Fondre though - jury still out as regards how successful his time was at Reading.

Hoop Blah
bcubed I generally agree with HB posts but I cant on this one

My dislike of Murray (and I think its true of others) is that he just doesnt look like he wants to be at Reading at all.

It seems like he thinks he is a bit too good for the Championship and as a result he doesnt put the effort in. He doesnt jump for the ball that effectively and would rather stand his ground and try to claim a free kick. I don't actually think he has that much movement and what he does is slow and he certainly doesn't put his body on the line and make that extra effort to get on the end of a cross. And what was he doing on Saturday? Head the ball man instead of letting it drop and skying it!

Won't be sorry to see him go even if it means we have Pog back

It's a fair comment in a way, he may not throw himself about as much or look like he's not that interested in being here, although I'm not sure I'd buy into that. If he doesn't then it would certainly sway my thinking into the don't keep him side of the fence.

I think it's more about whether he wants to be here under Clarke though. How many of our players have really looked that motivated or showing the kind of blood and thunder performances you're talking about under Adkins? Very few unfortunately.

Clarke is his own man and might not want Murray, or Murray might not want to be here. If that's the case then we won't be keeping him.

I don't think it comes down to him being good enough though. The biggest issue for me is his age. We'd be investing a lot in a player who's probably passed his best and isn't going to appreciate in value at all over the length of contract he'd be after. My biggest worry is that we have to sign him up for longer than he'd be of use, ala Roberts.

So he may be good enough as you contend, but is not showing the desire at present
Maybe Clarke can motivate him as you suggest but he hasn't got long and my bet is he will be off

Jimm Quinn was a good player for us and he was 34 when he joined.

Just thought I'd throw that into the mix.

Figures show that LeFondre was only slightly behind Dave kitson
Murray is also level with kitson

Murray 15 6 2.50

Apps Goals
Kitson 135 54 2.50
Doyle 157 55 2.85
Lita 83 20 4.15
Long 174 44 3.95
Roberts 28 6 4.66
Lefondre 104 39 2.66

Kitson was also good at tackling back and winning the ball in midfield, generally strengthening the team. Le Fondre was pretty poor at that, and was reliant on having the ball fed to him. Yes, he scored goals, but he didn't make very many for the rest of the team.

It's a fair point, despite Quinn 'only' being 32 when he signed for us.

His age doesn't mean he can't be a good player for us over a longer period of time but it does still go against him IMO.

Of course we should get rid off - he's useless!

Sadly, I doubt we will be able to keep him and then perhaps those who want to get rid of him will realise that he's far better than they make out and that we are really in the shyte without him.

I think his work rate proves he is showing desire.
I also thought he doesn't look happy here, but my palace supporting mate said he always comes across as miserable.

Agreed. It is ridiculous to suggest that Murray hasn't shown desire. If the workrate of the rest of the squad had been as high, we would be a lot further up the table and Adkins would still be manager.

Never get Reading fans, we have a chance to sign a proven championship goalscorer and some dont want him.

Dread to think where we would be in the league table without Glenn.

It's true. I've just checked the league rules. Apparently if you don't sign Glenn Murray you have to be relegated. Who would have thought it?

Quite. IMO we'll really be up shit creek when he goes back to Palace.

This.

I dont get it. oxf*rd my old boots, we as a team are.......underperforming. And Murray is singled out, questioned on his ability, stats, blah de blah as if he will be a prolific goal scorer whilst we are playing utter shit.

This 'lot' of fans deserve more treachery and misery.

Yep, lets hope he oxf*rd off back to Palace and leaves you 'lot' crying in your own petulance. Reading fans are indeed a bunch of cunts.

Phew, i feel better now. Thanks.

Given your petulant behaviour during McD's time as manager it seems strange that you are criticising others in this instance.

I've yet to see a replay of Murray's 1st goal, though apparently he missed the ball with his first attempt to poke home from a few yards out (according to Dellor).

Seen his 2nd goal. Great ball in by Norwood. Disastrous marking by Brighton, free header for Murray. Looks to me that the header was going in the keeper's direction, but fortunately for us it's hit the defender and deflected off into the corner.

The question remains: would Dominic Samuel (or similar) have done any worse with the two chances presented?

17 Appearances, 1,439 minutes, 8 goals at a goal every 179.8 minutes

1 in 2, that's considered the mark of a top striker, and he's playing for a side devoid of confidence!

Only a numpty can think he's no good.

Scoring is the easy part

Getting into the positions at the right time is what makes a good striker.
