Nope, they are mainly private providers with resident care funded by DHSC. The same goes for hospices. It’s unlikely that residents will be given a ‘good’ bed in an overworked NHS unit and will therefore be allowed a “natural death”.

Mrs Uke is a sister in a nursing care home 50 residents a third with dementia, and is shitting bricks about what is coming. These are long term patients so she knows them, their families etc.

It’s also staffed by more of those “unskilled” types who suddenly people seem to realise have actually kept our worlds going...

Absolutely agree with this. Always they bang on about NHS staff (and quite rightly so) but the carers who work in private nursing home and those that go to people’s homes on a daily basis supporting the elderly and a great many “at risk” patients really do need to be called out more as the absolute angels they mostly are - esp. as they get paid a pittance to do jobs which are actually a damn sight more important than a great many other jobs anywhere. Just imagine what they have to do every day in terms of not only the care provided but the extra bits added on top now to try and maintain as much protection for their “patients” as well as themselves and their families.

Raab is best known for taking extreme and arguably ridiculous positions on Brexit. As I alluded to, he was specifically criticised for saying he hadn’t understood our reliance on the Dover-Calais shipping line.

He was later the first leadership candidate to suggest a lengthy prorogation of Parliament in order to stop scrutiny of Brexit - this probably helped undermine Johnson when he tried to claim he was doing it for routine reasons and was found to have acted illegally.

At the best of times, government ministers are often great examples of the Peter Principle. The skills that make you a good lawyer or business leader are not the same skills that help you win an election. The skills that help you win an election are not the same skills that make you a decent MP, and there’s slightly more to becoming a minister than being a good MP. We often end up with senior ministers who are woefully out of their depth - consider Labour’s Home Secretaries under Blair and Brown. This current government has it even worse because of their insistence upon total lock-step agreement with their fantastical ideology that few people suited to ministerial office actually hold.

Surprises me that Abbott is the one picked out as “stupid” given that she’s by far the most intelligent figure on the British left.

Quick comparison:
Jeremy Corbyn was given every advantage in life and dropped out of his degree in Trade Union studies at North London Polytechnic.

Diane Abbott came from a working class immigrant background but got into grammar school, and then into Cambridge University, where she graduated with a 2:2 in History.

Obviously education is not everything, but the evidence of Abbott’s alleged stupidity seems to be that she once said “thousand” when she meant “million”, while the likes of Corbyn, McDonnell, and Long-Bailey can make gaffe after gaffe without getting the same thrown at them.

Anyway in this week’s Bagehot column, check it out, it says the current cabinet is the weakest in post- war history, and cites ( no, not junior minister Dorries, who is a fking star ) Patel and Raab as being particularly poor ( Raab being the PM’s stand-in if he gets ill is described as “ particularly worrying”. In the event, the PM is ill and it seems to be Michael Gove standing in. Fking hell).
It also says Williamson and Truss are “ over- promoted”. A euphemism, you’ll agree.

It advocates the PM sacking them all ( ok, it doesn’t say that, it says replace the current “government with a One Nation Tory government”. Or a government of national unity with Keir Starmer as deputy PM.

Things are that bad.
