Dowd? I am cool with that. He did ref our FA Cup game at Anfield and had no complaints with him. I doubted we were getting Webb again for a second game running. Dowd would have been my 2nd choice.

Shame. It was too much to hope for Howard Webb again.

I see that despite requesting a photo change it still hasn't been done.

Happy enough with that. Webb would have been better but he's a decent ref so I expect him to handle the occasion well.

We have had a shaky record with officials in play-off finals, as of course no-one will need reminding.

1995 - controversy should have started before the match (although if it did I didn't hear it). Unlike previous seasons the top-rated Football League referee was not chosen to referee the Division 1 play-off final. The ref in question, Gurnam Singh, took the Football League, Premier League and FA to an industrial tribunal some years later on a charge of racial discrimnation and he won his case. His main grievance was not getting a promotion to the Premier League but his case also included being overlooked for Reading's game against Bolton.

So instead we got the second best referee available. And for anyone that ever says we want referees to use common sense here is a good counter-example. Feeling sorry for the team who were behind, and the youngster who had just committed a foul, he bottled the decision to send him off and the rest is history.

2001 - by now we were in the Division 2 play-off final so there was no question about getting the top rated Football League referee. And it seems pretty clear that we didn't. In the opening moments of the game, Sammy Igoe was through on goal before being pulled back by a Walsall defender. A certain red card, but this referee bottled the decision as well. And of course the offender went on to play a blinder.

2011 - things have changed since the 1990s. For whatever reason, these matches are handled by the top referees in the country, rather than the top referees in the Football League. This surely has to be a good thing, and we've already seen a referee prepared to send a player off in the first minute of a semi-final. But will we see another bottle-job at Wembley? And if so who will benefit, because we were clearly just unlucky on the previous two occasions.
