Contracts

by Pepe the Horseman » 03 Dec 2014 10:21

I'm sure there's another thread on this, but couldn't find.

According to our friends at The Tilehurst End, there's 11 senior players out of contract at the end of the season. They've only listed six, but won't tell me who the others are, although I know Guthrie is one of them. Who am I missing? Who would you keep/get rid of?

Feds
Kelly
Pearce
Andersen
Gunter
Cummings
Guthrie
Blackman(?)

I'd keep Feds, Pearce, Andersen (will probs want to leave though), Gunter and Cummings from that list.

Feds - keep
Kelly - lets see how he gets on, but currently in the replace camp
Pearce - Wouldn't be surprised if contract doesn't get renewed, and a position were we have talent coming through.
Andersen - Let him move on, promote Lincoln
Gunter - Keep
Cummings - Keep
Guthrie - Get rid
Blackman(?) - Let go

I like Cummings, think he's solid back up.

A full back has to go to free up wages for a LB, so Kelly probably the one who will go out of that.

All that said, I would not be surprised if we let them all go and let Nigel go on a recruitment binge. (assuming cash is there)

That would be a surprise, I wouldn't mind that happening though tbf. Who have I missed? Jem?

They do tell you at the bottom of the article.

Danny Guthrie, Jem Karacan, Ryan Edwards, Royston Drenthe, and Craig Tanner

It's difficult to answer the question without really knowing how much the owners are likely to invest in new players, what division we're going to be in or just how close we are to failing FFP.

But assuming we'll be playing in the championship and that we will need to reduce the wage bill further due to reduced revenue then certainly Drenthe and Guthrie are certain gonners.

Jem I'd renew if there are signs that he could recover from his injury.

Edwards seems to have slipped out of the reckoning after some early season promise but would be worth a years extention and I'd say the same for Andersen as he's good cover.

Whether certain sections of supporters agree or not, Federici and Gunter are two of the few saleable assets we have and nailed on starters for the manager so it makes little sense to me to let them leave for nothing So again I'd renew.

No point in keeping all three right backs so I'd lose Kelly ahead of Cummings.

Pearce is the cunundrum for me. He's been part of a championship winning side but unlike Federici he looks nothing like as capable of that standard now and I think the players coming through have more potential.. Also I just think we could do far better for the money we're paying him. It's a shame because he's a local lad. come through the ranks, former Captain etc but I think we've seen the best he has to offer.

Renew Tanner asap.

As I said it's difficult to really give a truly considered opinion without knowing the conditions and stipulations Hammond/Adkins will be working under but that's my two pennorth.

Ah, fair enough, must've missed that. Yeh, deffo renew Jem and Tanner. I'd completely forgotten about Edwards tbh.

Royston has an option for another year. How does that work? Can either party trigger it?

Sometimes they can be triggered by a certain number of games played.

Doubt that would be an issue in this case.

Feds - keep. My only concern is whether he is willing to accept lower wages as can't see us offering the same amount he's on now (30/35k?). But then I don't see other clubs doing so either.
Kelly - get rid
Pearce - difficult. I like him but if he ends up sitting on the bench a lot for the rest of the season behind Cooper or Ferdinand (which i'm not sure will happen) it's hard to justify keeping him. May depend on the wages we are able to offer him.
Andersen - keep
Gunter -keep
Cummings - keep
Guthrie - get rid
Jem Karacan - His recovery is a bit of a concern. Thought he'd be back by Christmas at the latest and he's still got to get back to form. As long as he finds his form in time for the last couple of months then no problem keeping him.
Ryan Edwards - what's happened to him? Injured? Not even playing for the U21s atm and don't think he'll be eligible next year. Seems a long way from the first team squad. Undecided.
Royston Drenthe - get rid
Craig Tanner - absolutely have to keep.

Feds - keep, two years
Kelly - let go. Sign a specialist left back or promote a youth player, preferably Sheppard
Pearce - depends on how he's doing but probably keep, two years
Andersen - let go (he probably wouldn't sign on again anyway)
Gunter - keep, two or three years
Cummings - torn. Not particularly fussed either way, particularly if Long keeps progressing
Guthrie - wages too high, surplus. Only keep in the unlikely event that we're promoted
Karacan - risky. Offer three years if he's back to his best. Otherwise, one year on lower wages, with an option for another year and a pay rise above his current wage after ten or fifteen matches.
Drenthe - only keep if we get promoted.
Edwards - not threatening the first team. Release.
Tanner - renew, five years.

Others expiring:
Jon Henly - probably give him another two years
Stuart Moore - release
Pierce Sweeney - too early to call. I'd probably offer two years and then send him on loan next season so Dickie and Hyam can become first choice for the U21s.
Sammi - he's come on this year but I'm not confident he'll ultimately make it. Maybe two years.
Dominic Samuel - again, depends on how he does for the rest of the season, but I think we'd probably be better off recruiting from outside of the club or promoting other strikers. He will be an overage player for the U21s next season and playing him will deny Cardwell and Novakovich football

All the second year scholars will need professional contracts, except Cardwell, Collins, Novakovich and Urbancic who already have them queued up. There might be a few more - I'd be surprised if we haven't given Ward, Sheppard and Husin deals on the sly - but those are the only ones I know about. I imagine most of them will be renewed given that we kept McClennan and Shaughnessy on last year and they didn't even make the U18s side regularly, but one or two might be in danger.

Feds - Keep but high earner so brace yourselves
Kelly - Shite. Prem wage. Cheerio!
Pearce - Vastly over-paid. Cheerio!
Andersen - Not good enough on loan in a substandard league last season, not good enough here. Cheerio!
Gunter - Keep
Cummings - Keep, but suspect he's pissed off not playing
Guthrie - Talented waste of space. Prem wages. Cheerio!
Blackman(?) - Keep (lol)
Karacan - Over-rated headless chicken. A tryer but too injury prone. Probably stick around tho.
Tanner - Young, cheap, determined and talented. Keep!
Akpan(?) - Bin!!!

I'd keep Feds, Pearce, Andersen (will probs want to leave though), Gunter and Cummings from that list.

Federici and Andersen.

I'd like to keep both but realistically we can't/won't. If Federici will accept sensible money then he's No1 and for the sake of his career, Andersen needs to be first choice somewhere. I'm happy with Anderson if Federici's wage demands are too excessive. It's great having a clutch of good keepers at the club but the youngsters need to see that there is a real opportunity for progression

Kelly, Gunter, Cummings.

I like Cummings, he's a good squad player, I'd offer him a new contract.

For me, it's a question of Kelly or Gunter, we don't need both. if I had to chose, I'd go Gunter but to be honest I'd be inclined to move both on and bring someone else in with Cummings as backup

Pearce

Tricky one. The Pearce of 3 years ago, I'd sign up like a shot but it's not working for him at the moment, he's a reasonably high earner and we have decent young players coming through. He's got 6 months to earn a new contract.

Guthrie, Karacan, Drenthe

Guthrie and Drenthe cost too much and offer too little. We already have a replacement for Guthrie in Norwood. Get rid of both

I'd offer Jem a year extention now with an option to extend which gives him 18 months to prove he can get back to his previous level

Tanner, Edwards.

If Tanner's as good as everyone says he is then it's a no brainer to get him tied down ASAP. Edwards hasn't let anyone down in the games he's played but with the options we already have and the other under 18's coming through, I'd be inclined to release him.

Feds - keep. Try to reduce his wages
Andersen - loan
Kelly / Gunter - let one of them go, logical one would be Kelly, but I'd see how he & Gunter get on over the next month. If Kelly does ok and Gunter doesn't improve, I'd look to sell Gunter to fund a LB.
Cummings keep
Pearce I think keep, but similar to Fed try to reduce wages. Don't be held to ransom.
Guthrie - release
Karacan - totally dependent on his recovery. Assuming he can manage it, keep.
Edwards - release, but wouldn't be upset to see him stay on relatively low wages
Drenthe - get rid so quickly we'd have to shoot him out a cannon
Tanner - keep.
Blackman(?) - keep - reduce wages. Not fussed if he goes.
Mackie sign him up
Murray sign him up

Since coming in at Right Back Kelly's stopped the flow of goals being scored against us from that wing. Same thing happened immediately after he signed. Alright he doesn't get forward very well, but he's got to be a defender first.

The overriding factor is of course if he's willing to take a wage drop, but I wouldn't be as quick to bin him as some.
