Definitely not. He may not have been much of a manager but he was a top drawer defender and part of a brilliant 70’s Monchengladbach side.

Not doubting his playing ability for one second. I think the Scots' biggest complaint about him was that, for such a great player, his Scotland team played such negative football. I;m just about old enough to remember Vogts and Heynkes as players, Netzer less so although I believe he's seen as a Matt Le Tissier type player, a phenomenally talented, but mercurial player who was pretty loyal for a less fashionable club but never quite trusted by international managers. Pretty shit hot record as manager at Hamburg as well,

I must admit my knowledge of the history of the German game really is limited to reading Ulrich Hesse's book Tor! it's a fantastic potted history of the game in Germany though.

I lived in Monchengladbach as a little un which is why I like to see them do well. I remember they played Liverpool in or around 1973 over two legs in the EUFA Cup Final. They lost the first leg 3-0. They were all over Liverpool in the second leg which they won 2-0 but were desperately unlucky not to win by a few more.
So keep an eye out for them.
