Snitching on fans

by Greatwesternline » 09 Apr 2025 10:50

I was a casual observer of a group of Reading fans (a mix of about 6 boys and girls probably around 15 and 16) giving grief to a fan in front of them who was on his own, calling him a c*nt etc, ostensibly it would seem because at one point of them farted and they decided to spend the rest of the match attributing it to the guy on his own, and bizarrely spraying at him, who eventually told them (politely) to stop it, upon which the abuse continued.

The group were filming most of the match and have posted all the videos on tiktok, good videos to be fair, but have identified themselves in the process and seem to be fairly prolific RFC tiktokers

Is it appropriate to report them to the club for this antisocial behaviour or should we just ignore this a childish messing around.....?

If they were just messing around and being kids, ignore.
If they were genuinely being abusive to another fan, report.

I'd report it - calling fans, particularly those on their own a C--- is just not on. I go to games on my own, and despite being a fully grown adult, I still feel a bit self-conscious and lonely somehow. To be targeted like this would probably cause me to leave.

I'm also sick of some of our fans acting like this, both at home and away. I wouldn't want them banned necessarily, but I would want the club to identify them and warn them or something. If they had issues at home games, then maybe a ban would be in order.

Yeah this. I used to go to games on my own at 13/14 years old, being the only Reading fan I knew, and part of the reason I kept going was because people around me made me feel part of it all. And the South Bank or Tilehurst end wasn't always the place you'd expect to get that kind of reaction to a young kid.

I mostly go on my own too and these type of groups are now sadly cropping up.

They would have been trying to get a proper reaction to post on tiktok etc....sadly this age group live by social media.

Bit late now…..
Call it out at the time.
Report it when it can be stopped
Not having a go at you personally as there may be good reasons not to intervene personally but casually observing something that was wrong is not the way to go.

Agree with this.

I totally get this. I've never been to a Reading game on my own and can't see that changing. Only times I go to see my football on my own is to see my local non-league team occasionally.

This reminds me of the time I reported someone for violating the forum rules, and everyone turned on me. My advice - keep quiet.

Genuine question- why didn’t you try and intervene at the time?

Worst case scenario: two people now being abused where previously an individual was being singled out.

Best case scenario: Your intervention encourages other bystanders to intervene and support you and the victim, and the abuse stops.
