Irony, irony

by Tom Clancey » 16 Oct 2006 20:25

Not sure whether I am alone in thinking how odd it is that the two members of the Chelsea team that could legitmately dive ended up with the bad injuries, whilst the rest of their mates threw themselves around like latter day Brian Phelps, without apparent effect.

Whilst showing my age, it was a pleasure to be taken back to a classic Leeds Utd away performance of the early 70's. Time wasting, organised referee baiting, petty fouls to break up the home teams pattern of play, etc etc.

Just like that Leeds team if they had stuck to just playing their football they probably would have won quite comfortably.

Spot on Tom.
That Leeds team could play some terrific football. Their players could hit passes to each other without looking up, as they knew where there team-mates would be. They never really had any out and out stars, just a mean defence and an engine room in midfield, with strikers that other clubs hadn't been too interested in, but they ultimately under-achieved, through cynical play that derived from their cynical manager.
This Chelsea side may well be remembered in a similar manner.

Agreed. Chelsea won't be well or fondly remembered. The comparison with Leeds from the Revie era is a good one.

That said, they may not care now but they will in the future. It goes beyond trophies, given what they have spent and the style of football they play they will never be loved. They are miles behind the recent Arsenal & Man U sides of recent years.

Effective but boring with many of the Leeds attributes. Don't their supporters see this, or they don't care?
