report

Reading went down a goal to nil against West Ham
tonight in a very entertaining game at Upton Park. Teddy Sheringham scored
his first goal for West Ham on his home league debut and it proved enough
to give the hammers their first win of the season. The former Manchester
Utd and Spurs striker put the ball in the net from six yards after 82
minutes after Graham Murty's sliced clearance fell to Luke Chadwick who
crossed for Sheringham to slot home. In a very entertaining and open game
Reading could have taken an early lead within the first 14 seconds when
the ball fell to Nicky Forster who layed it off for Andy Hughes who was
guilty of a poor finish fireing over from 16 yards. In an end to game
both sides could have had a hat full of goals but for some very good defending
and on occasions some poor finishing. After a couple of blunders on Saturday
Marcus Hahnemann was back to his best denying Marlon Harewood on a number
of occasions and although Reading let it slip eight minutes from time
they can come away from the game with many positives after a fantastic
display and will go to Brammall Lane on Saturday full of confidence. The
only concern from the game was Glen little who picked up a hamstring strain
but it is hoped he will be fit to play a part in Saturdays visit to Sheffield.

FANS' POST MATCH OPINION

Well played Reading! This game could have finished 3-3 but didn't you
just know they were going to pinch it 1-0 as the game entered the final
ten minutes. We'll win games this season playing far worse than last night
but that's football , just had to be against them . At least Parwho was
gracious in defeat saying we were the better team for most of the game.
If you don't get the ball in the net you don't win games, simple, and
though maybe hard on Hughes, he really should have hit the target after
15 seconds to give us a dream start rather than put the ball in the back
row of the stand from 15 yards out. I was proud of my team last night,
we defended well, apart from Murty's kamikaze moment which led to their
goal by old man Rupert Bear. Midfield worked it's socks off and everybody
tried so hard but sadly all for bugger all. If we continue to play like
that we'll finish above West Ham I assure you. Another very tough game
at Sheffield on Saturday but my belief is they all have to played sometime
so let's get at them while we're fresh and believing in ourselves. Just
one other thing, last night live on Sky we outplayed and competed against
West Ham at their ground, let's just think how far we've come in such
a short time. Keep the faith!! URZZZ |
