report

Reading's first away victory of this season's Division One campaign was sweet revenge, against a side that were responsible for putting Reading's rise to Division One off for a season. The last time the two sides met was in the Second Division play-off final, two seasons ago, which saw Walsall take the place into Division One at Reading's expense. Today the game again threatened to swing either way - but this time it was Reading that gradually gained the edge and came away with the victory - making it nine points from six Division One matches. After the mid-week home win over Burnley, this result was a real bonus for the Royals, who have officially now made an excellent start to the season by leaping into the top ten.

The first half was a half of few chances for either side with Walsall perhaps having slightly more of the play, but not creating many clear cut chances. Walsall managed to put the ball in the net once but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside. Other than that the home side only really looked likely to score when there was a mix-up in the Reading defence. There were a few occassions when we looked shakey at the back, but generally we kept it tight. Hahnemann, continuing in goal in place of the out-of-favour Phil Whitehead, was wide awake to clear up a couple of problems when the defence failed to clear. Down the other end top-scorer Jamie Cureton had Reading's best chances and so nearly put Reading ahead before the break. Cureton had a good free kick that was heading in on target and required the Walsall keeper to get down quickly to make the save. Jamie could have prodded another chance home after Butler and Hughes did the work and Hughes' cross found Cureton in the middle, however a last gap tackle prevented Cureton from sticking it home.

There had been bright spells for both sides during the opening 45 minutes but Walsall looked slightly more comfortable on the ball. Reading had played a couple too many long balls and looked best when the ball was played forward on the crowd - with Forster looking dangerous down the right. After the break Reading seemed to pull their game together a bit more and emerged as the stronger looking of the two sides. A good spell of possession football from the Royals could have seen us go ahead with Butler having a couple of chances that game to nothing. After Reading failed to take the lead Walsall had perhaps their best five minute spell of the game mid-way through the half with Hahnemann claiming a couple of dangerous crosses and making a point-blank save after a close range header on target.

Reading eventually took the lead after a Walsall attack. Hughes had been guilty of a couple of terrible passes just moments ago but created and scored the goal after taking the ball out of the Reading defence and running through the middle before supplying Salako. Salako legged it down the wing and crossed to the middle, where Hughes had kept up and got on the end of it to volley it into the ground sending the ball bouncing up and into the back of the net. 1-0 to the Royals. With the pace of the game picking up all the time both sides could have scored before Reading sealed the victory. Once again Salako did the job down the left and crossed again to Hughes who was more than delighted to score his second of the game to put Reading 2-0 up. With Hughes having one of the best spells of his Reading career perhaps, he could have made it three after surging forward, but got caught in two minds and failed to either shoot or lay the ball off to Butler. But it didn't matter - Hughes' two goals had won the game and propelled the Royals up the table.

FANS' POST MATCH OPINION

'4 - 3 on aggregate', was the song of the Royals' fans at the end of the game. Whilst this result could not make up for the defeat at Cardiff, it was, very satisfying.
The game started disastrously as Walsall scored in the opening minute although it was quickly disallowed for offside. Those of us in the away corner could not tell that and so there was great relief all around. The first half settled down into a bit of a stale mate with neither side having the ability to open the other up. Walsall probably had the better possession but failed to use it. They also had some very tall defenders - it seems everyone does apart from us. We struggled going forward. Shorey was made to go inside most of the time and Solako was virtually ,a marked man and struggled to get into the game. We also seemed to be having trouble with our footing or whether the ball did not run as well as normal, it was hard to say. Nil nil at half time was a scoreline that we certainly would have settled for. We did not pass the ball as well as against Burnley and hit more channel balls, but they did seem to have purpose to them. Butler worked hard but Cureton did not get the type of chance that he thrives on. In midfield, Watson sprayed ball around and Hughes was quietly effective. If we were going to hurt them it was most likely to be through Forster.
The second half started in the way that the first had finished but we gradually began to show more purpose. They were definitely worried by Forster and Solako began to get into the game more as Walsall pushed forward more. It was a sparkling move that lead to Hughes's opener, and though credit goes to Solako for putting the ball in, there were several others involved. It was good to see Hughes scoring. He has tremendous potential and if he is to realise it then he should be contributing 10 goals a season. In order to do that he needs to get himself beyond the strikers more than at present. His finish today was instinctive. His second was almost a replica and he could have had a third as well. Walsall did not help their cause by loosing a man who made the mistake of fouling Parkie! A terrific result and a thorough performance. all players worked hard. Williams was good in the air and Murty was, well just Murty.
We now know that we should fear no team in this division. Yes the standard of football is higher and more enjoyable to watch, but we are capable of dealing with it. We do have weaknesses as will all teams, and the priority must be to provide some cover at the back, but 9 points from 6 games represents a solid start and one upon which we can build.
Well done to all today.

I sat with the home fans and quietly enjoyed this close and entertaining match. Walsall ran out of steam in the closing stages and Reading pounced to steal all the points. It always looked as though one goal would be enough for either team and so it nearly proved; until just before the final whistle when Reading added number two to their tally. A great away win, well played lads! Mackie was the star man. He was rock-solid and his bandaged head added to his warrior-like performance. Has he moulded himself on Tony Adams? Even the way he runs is Adamslike. Anyway, 3 points well earned today.
Hurrah for the Biscuitmen!

It certainly sounds like the Royals are maturing. It was good to see that Pards put out a very threatening team with Salako, Fozzy, Curo, Butts and Hughsey. I expect Colin Lee was looking at how to contain them rather than concentrating on tactics to put us under pressure. The last ten minutes of the first half certainly sounded like the lads were passing the ball around comfortably and frustrating Walsall. Walsall appeared to have a more direct approach to the game and certainly caused a few hairy moments for our defence. I think that is also still the difference between the top teams in this division and the Royals. When we get the ball we should be more direct about getting the ball into the danger areas instead of going for the additional fancy passes. All in all it seems as though we're on the right track and I have full faith in Pards' ability to learn and progress after every game and steer the team to a top-ten finish.

What a result! Hippo Hughesy we salute you, should have got a hat trick and gone down in Reading folklore. Sounded a great performance on the wonderfully biased Radio Berkshire. A lovely bit of sweet revenge. We'd have settled for a point at Walsall and Rotherham so anything next week is a bonus . Two clean sheets on the trot, keep it going lads.
