Nigel Adkins has been confirmed as the new Reading FC manager.
It seems it doesn't take too many articles discussing the lack of news on the appointment of the new Reading manager to make something happen! After many weeks waiting for Adkins, the firm favourite, to complete his move to Reading he has finally agreed a deal after further discussions with the club yesterday. Adkins visited Reading last week but failed to agree a package to join the club, however extended discussions have now seen the club get their man. Adkins signs a three year contract to keep him at Reading until the summer of 2016.
Adkins was confirmed as Reading manager in a press conference at the Madejski Stadium this morning. Reading owner Anton Zingarevich made the announcement and declared that Adkins is "perfect" for Reading FC. The former Southampton boss will now be in charge of the Royals before their trip to Arsenal this weekend. His first home game in charge will be interesting - Southampton visit the Madejski Stadium on Saturday 6th April - that will be a game Adkins will be determined to turn into three points from him former employers. A victory won't save Reading from relegation but it would be very satisfying for all involved at Reading.
Andy Crosby has been named as Adkins' assistant manager. Crosby was assistant manager for Adkins at Southampton and was a player at Scunthorpe while Adkins was in charge there.
Adkins brings plenty of managerial experience to Reading after success at Southampton. At the Saints he took them from League One to the Premier League in successive seasons. His sacking from Southampton earlier this season seemed a bizarre decision and was deeply unpopular with the Southampton fans. Adkins had previously been manager at Scunthorpe United after being promoted to team boss from the position of physio. He went on to get Scunthorpe promoted to the Championship on a limited budget. His history certainly seems a good fit with Reading.
Adkins Managerial Career
- Scunthorpe United: 124 games - 67 wins
- Southampton: 199 games - 83 wins
