Rotheram have been hit by a injury crisis which makes Readings look Pathetic.It looks as though Ronnie Moore will only have 14 available professionals To pick from.

Paul Dillon,Chris Sedgwick and Mark Williams are all long term injuries. Chris Beech (unwell), Will Varty (knock), Stewart Talbot (thigh strain), Paul Pettinger, Marvin Bryan (knee injury) and Trevor Berry are all set to miss the game.

This means that altough they have 14 players to Pick from they will be vastly weaker than they could have been.

This is Perfect news for a Reading team also struggling with key Injuries to Tony Rougier and Sammy Igoe. Good news though is that Adrian Williams returns and Keith Jones is set to make his league debut from the Bench.

Both Alan Pardew and Martin Allen are tonight close to agreeing new deals hat will keep them with the club on a long term basis.However it seems likely that Martin will have a clause in his contract allowing him to speak to other clubs if any managerial position becomes available which he is interested in.

Also on the Playing front Keith Scott is training with Leyton Orient so a move for the big man could well be on the cards.

According to the Evening Post Reading are still tracking Notts County Central Midfielder Andy Hughes and a move for the player seems likely if Alan Pardew can clear some of his transfer listed players out of the squad.

Adrian Williams and Keith Jones successfully played ninety minutes of football for the reserves this afternoon as Reading drew at home with Cambridge United. Pardew will be pleased with the fitness of both players who will now be available for selection on Saturday if required. Graeme Murty also played a full game and could be in line for a game at Rotherham as well. Cambridge took the lead for the visitors before Stuart Gray made it 1-1 towards the end of the match with a long range effort.

Reading's home reserve fixture against Cambridge United on Wednesday afternoon (kick-off 2pm) will see the return from injury of both Adie Williams and Keith Jones. The two players have been out all season so far and will both be hoping to play the full ninety minutes. With Barry Hunter suspended for Saturday's trip to Rotherham it could mean that Adie Williams will be in for a quick return to first team action. Assuming both players come through the game then there's a good chance they'll be in the squad for Saturday's game.

McGhee Lands Millwall Post

Mark McGhee has finally got his way back into football after a two-year wait. He takes over the Millwall post after Keith Stevens and Alan McLeary where strangely sacked two weeks ago.

Also if you can remember on the opening day of last season Bristol City right back Gerard Lavin was sent off for kicking the ball into the crowd. Mark Stevens’s wrist was broken in the incident and lodged a complaint to the police and today, after a court appearance, Mr Lavin admitted assault and was forced to pay £300 damages to the Reading fan.

Reading picked up three yellow cards on Saturday with Butler, Cureton, and Viveash all being booked. Cureton's card was his fifth of the season which means he picks up a one match suspension and will miss the home tie against Wycombe on Saturday 14th October.

Although that might be bad news for Reading fans, Millwall fans are facing some even worse news - Mark McGhee is emerging as a favourite to take the vacant Millwall manager's job. The fat Scottish one is certainly not a fans favourite for the job at Millwall, however there is strong rumour that he is being lined up. McGhee, the former Reading, Leicester and Wolves manager has been without a manager's job since being booted out by Wolves in November 1998.

Reading hit five more goals at the Madejski Stadium this afternoon, to continue their current free flowing run of home goals. Reading beat Swansea City 5-1 with a Martin Butler hat-trick to move up to fourth in the Second Division table. The 5-1 win follows previous home wins of 4-0 and 5-0 - and means Reading are the Division's leading goal-scorers.

Evers Waits For Grimsby Start

Sean Evers missed out on making a start for Grimsby reserves last night after their reserve game against Scunthorpe was rained off. With a couple of players returning from injury Evers looks set to remain on trial at Grimsby, and will get another chance to impress his former manager at Luton, Lennie Lawrence. Pardew has stated that Evers does not fit into his current plans and is looking for Grimsby to sign Evers on a one or two month loan period.

Scott Howie, Stuart Gray and Graeme Murty all completed 90 Minutes today as the reserves beat Southend 2-1 with goals in the second half from forgotten man Keith Scott. This will be a great boost for manager Alan Pardew as he licks his wounds after losing Sammy Igoe, the Royals in form, player at the weekend.

Evers On Grimsby Trial

Out-of-favour Reading midfielder Sean Evers is currently on trial with first division side Grimsby Town. Evers remains one of Reading's most expensive players frozen out in the reserves, after failing to impress in the first team after his £500,000 signing in March 1999 from Luton Town. Evers has made 27 appearances for the Royals - but only 15 of those have been in the starting eleven. A transfer seems unlikely in the short term and it would also see Reading make a big loss on the player.

Meanwhile Sammy Igoe's injury has officially been confirmed as ankle ligament damage. It has been confirmed that "There's no bone damage but his ankle has really swollen up." by Paul Turner, the Reading physio. Igoe will be out for up to two months.

This is the news that all Royals fans have been dreading over the weekend. Sammy Igoe will miss up to six weeks of the season after injuring his ankle while playing against Peterborough on Saturday.

This comes as a major blow after Igoe had demonstrated his full potential against Oldham, and had quickly made himself a firm fans favourite.

This means boss Alan Pardew will be without seven players who would otherwise have been selected for Saturday's match at home to Swansea.

Bernal Set For New Role

Andy Bernal is aiming to act as a scout for Reading in the future after taking up a new job as an agent and scout in his native Australia.
Bernal returned Down Under during the summer after being forced to accept the worst and announce his retirement from the game because of a long-term foot injury.
The 34-year-old has since got himself a job with worldwide football giants SFX who, among others, look after the interests of David Beckham, Alan Shearer and Michael Owen.
Bernal's main role, once his FIFA licence comes through, will be to act as chief talent spotter for the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal.
But Bernal, who signed for Reading from Sydney Olympic in 1994, will also be keeping his old club in mind and hopes to be able to point a few Australian stars of the future in the direction of Reading over the next few years.
Bernal said: "Although I'm operating mainly from Australia my job will be worldwide. We have tied up deals with Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal. But hopefully if Reading go up a division and then into the Premiership then I can start bringing the better younger players to the Madejski Stadium."

Royals Wait For News Of Igoe Injury

Reading are waiting for news of the injury to Sammy Igoe, who was stretchered off just before half time during Reading's 0-1 defeat at Peterborough on Saturday. Sammy was brought down during one of his storming runs down the right wing and was immediately carried off and substituted. Igoe had been the best player on the pitch during the first half, following on from his recent excellent performances - if the injury is long term it will be a serious blow to the Royals.

Reading went down to a 89th minute penalty after being all over the home side during the second half but failing to score. The Royals drop just one place to fifth in the Second Division table.

Martin Butler faces a late fitness test after he sustained an Injured knee halfway through the 5 nil mauling of Oldham. If Butler does not make the team it is expected Tuesday night substitute Jimmy Mcintyre will step in to partner on fire Jamie Cureton up front.

It is likely that this will be the only change from tuesday nights side as Matty Robinson misses his third game in a row with an achillies injury.

Reading Football Club have appointed a new member of staff to the management team. Brian McDermott, a former Arsenal player, joins the Royals as Chief Scout and will also manage the Under 17 youth Academy side.

Meanwhile, Reading's reserve team won 2-1 at Colchester today with two goals from striker Darius Henderson. However, no matter how many goals Darius scores at reserve level he remains unlikely to break into the first team this season with Cureton and Butler in such top form.

Reading made it three straight wins in the league tonight by stuffing Oldham Athletic 5-0 in front of 7,768 fans at the Madejski Stadium. The run of form is the best the Royals have had since leaving Elm Park to arrive at the Madejski Stadium. Reading have gone fourth in the table - three points from the top - in the best start to the season the Royals have had since the play-off season. The victory means that Reading have scored ten and conceeded none in the last three league fixtures.

Robinson And Caskey Doubtful

Both Matt Robinson and Darren Caskey are doubtful for tonight's home tie against Oldham at the Madejski Stadium (kick-off 7:45pm). Robinson missed Saturday's 4-0 home win against Brentford - Gurney looks set to continue at left back with Newman playing on the right. If Caskey is judged able to play then Reading could put out the same team that was successful against Brentford.

Stamp Free Agent

Left back Neville Stamp is being allowed to leave Reading after failing to win a first team place, despite promising much at youth level.
Stamp has developed through the youth system at the club and at 19 has only got as far as the fringes of the league side. He made one sub appearance the season before last,but none at all last season when the club was in a major state of flux.
Stamp has gone to third division York on trial in a bid to kick-start his career, despite having a year left to run on his Reading contract.
At the Madejski Stadium there is a big queue of players in front of him, not least Andy Gurney and Matthew Robinson and there is precious little scope for him to stay.
At York he hopes to convince the management there that he has the quality and the potential to develop at least to that level, and possibly beyond.
Reading pride themselves on their youth scheme but of the 16 players on show against Brentford last weekend only Alex Haddow and Jamie Ashdown had come through that system.
Haddow came on as a sub with ten minutes to go and Ashdown was reserve goalkeeper only because Scott Howie, another import, was coming back from injury.

Martin Allen Rejects New Contract

Reading assistant manager Martin Allen has rejected a new contract offer from the club. Martin Allen - known as "Mad Dog" arrived at the beginning of 2000 after coaching at Portsmouth, and has played a massive part in turning the fortunes of Reading Football Club around. Allen's arrival resulted in Reading's fortunes turning around last season as the club put together a string of good results to climb up the table. Allen, born in Reading, has always been a Reading fan and expects every player to share his love of the club.

However Allen's existing contract runs until the end of the current season - leaving plenty of time for future negotiations between Allen and Reading FC. It seems likely Allen is waiting to see how things progress through the season before putting pen to paper.

Meanwhile manager Alan Pardew is also involved in contract negotiations but is expected to accept an extended contract from the club during the season.

Defender Injury Crisis?

If the current problems with the defence aren't bad enough, the majority of our defensive players are struggling to be fit for Saturday's home tie against Brentford. Viveash and Hunter have been struggling in the centre of defence with Adrian Williams out injured. Although Williams is well on the road to recovery, he won't be able to play for at least a week or two. Barry Hunter could now also be ruled out on Saturday along with Matt Robinson. With Polston still out injured this could leave a centre-back pairing of Viveash and Mackie (who came on for Hunter at half-time on Tuesday night). Although Andy Gurney is fit he could be dropped with Ricky Newman coming in at right back.

Meanwhile, Leyton Orient have been rewarded for their victory at the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday with a draw to Newcastle in the second round of the Worthington Cup.

Rougier Set For More Call Ups

Tony Rougier could be set for more international call ups over the coming season after Trinidad and Tobago qualified for the next stage of their World Cup qualification. Rougier wasn't able to play after being ruled out with his ankle injury and missed his side beat Canada 4-0 in front of a home crowd of 22,000. Trinidad and Tobago, under the management of Ian Porterfield, qualify with two games spare in their initial qualification group.

Meanwhile, the Reading under-19s academy side had a great result at the weekend with a 3-2 win at Middlesbrough in the Academy League, after going 1-2 down. Darius Henderson, Craig Brown and Matt Birnie got the goals for the Royals. The under-17s didn't do quite so well, losing out 3-0.

Martin Williams Completes Swindon Move

Martin Williams, former Reading striker, has completed a short-contract move to bottom of the table Swindon Town. Williams left Reading during the summer when his contract was not renewed, and he was due to immediately join Swindon until a knee injury stopped the deal taking place. Williams joins Swindon on a three month contract which will almost certainly be extended if he remains injury free.
Colin Todd, currently managing Swindon who have just one point from their opening four league games, said: "Martin has pace and strength and will give us a new option up front. I'm still looking for a couple of new faces."

Neil Smith and Keith Jones are confirmed to be back in full training after both missed the start of the season through injury. It seems that although both are back in training Saturday's trip to Port Vale may just come too soon for the midfield pair. However it seems likely that with the Royals looking depleted in the centre of midfield, after the loss of Ricky Newman, that if there is any way that either of the pair can play then they will.

Other news is that Keith Scott will be suspended for three league games following his red card while playing at centre back for the reserves.

Tony Rougier is expected to be out for a month after limping off during Tuesday night's 3-3 draw with Stoke at the Madejski Stadium. Rougier has had a relatively injury free career in football until his arrival at Reading. A scan has revealed Rougier is suffering from damaged ankle ligaments. Better news is that Newman will probably still be in the squad for Saturday's visit to Port Vale after his back injury was confirmed not to be a problem. Tony Rougier has been ruled out of Trinidad's World Cup qualifer against Canada on Saturday after picking up an ankle injury against Stoke.
Rougier, signed from Port Vale for £350,000 earlier his month, was set to miss the match at his former club this weekend so he could play for his country.
But the knock against the local rivals has forced the 29-year-old to pull out of the clash.
Manager Alan Pardew said: "Tony won't be able to play for his country on Saturday which is a shame for him but he can't afford to risk it."
Pardew added that Ricky Newman, replaced by Sammy Igoe late on, could also be out of action this weekend after picking up a knock.
"Ricky's got a knee in the back," said Pardew. "He'll probably be out of Saturday's match but it's not too serious and he should be OK after that."

Both Newman and Rougier could be added to Reading's injury list following tonights 3-3 draw with Stoke City at the Madejski Stadium. Rougier limped off in the second half with what appeared to be an ankle injury, while Newman needed to be stretchered off towards the end of the game with what appeared to be a serious back injury following a collision. New signing Jamie Cureton is poised for a starting role against Stoke on Tuesday, after coming on as a second half substitute at Northampton.
Cureton could well be promoted from the bench as Alan Pardew looks to find a winning formula following yesterday's disappointing defeat at Northampton. Pardew will not have been pleased with the lack-lustre display, and he's expected to freshen things up with the introduction of Cureton, after watching his strikers draw a blank at the Sixfields Stadium.

Alan Pardew is considering offering trialist striker Marcus Richardson a full-time deal to prevent rivals Cambridge from snatching him.
The 22-year-old hot-shot, who played for Slough Town last season, hit a brace in the reserve team's 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace in midweek, winning the admiration of reserve team coach Nicky Hammond.

Steve Keen as left Reading to join Fulham as Academy Director replacing new Crystal Palace boss Alan Smith, Keen who was Under 17 coach for the Royal's Academy as also had spells as first team coachg for Reading under Tommy Burns.

Yesterday afternoon the Royals reserves played their opening home game of the new Avon Combination League Cup season against Crystal Palace at Farnborough Town's Cherrywood Road ground. The Royals are in a group also containing Portsmouth, Bristol Rovers and Bristol City, and a 3-3 draw leaves the group well balanced.

Reading went two goals up in the opening half, the first coming from impressive trialist Marcus Richardson with a good finish, and the second being added from the penalty spot by Jim McIntyre. Palace then came back strongly with three unanswered goals to put themselves 3-2 ahead, but Reading rescued a point with about five minutes remaining with an equaliser from Richardson.

There was good news with Graeme Murty and Chris Smith both completing the full 90 minutes as they continue to recover to full fitness, and there were also impressive displays in midfield from Academy youngsters Matt Birnie and Mark Boddy.

As revealed last week Bristol Rovers' Jamie Cureton has signed for Reading. It was hoped that Reading FC could complete the signing during Saturday's first home game of the season in front of the fans. Reading ran out 2-0 winners over Swindon, however the Cureton deal was delayed while personal terms were agreed with the player. Cureton has successfully passed a medical and personal terms have now been agreed - he will sign on a three year contact to keep him at the club until the end of the 2002/2003 season. Reading are close to confirming the signing of highly rated striker Jamie Cureton from Bristol Rovers tonight in a bargain £250,000 deal. Cureton will sign for Reading provided he can accept personal terms being offered by Reading Football Club. The clubs have agreed the fee after Cureton had expressed a interest in moving after failing to pledge his future to the West Country club. After an unhappy close season spell Cureton is keen to move on and sees Reading as a perfect opportunity to further his career. With Nicky Forster out all season the news could not be better for Reading fans who will remember Cureton as the player who hit four past Reading in January 1999 at the Madejski Stadium when Bristol Rovers won 0-6.

Cureton, born in Bristol, has a fantastic strike rate for Rovers after signing for 200,000 quid in October 1996 from Norwich City - and was expected to have a far larger price tag. In 200 games for Rovers, Cureton has managed to hit 78 goals. The deal looks extremely likely to go ahead which could mean a strike force of Butler and Cureton for Reading this season. Tickets for the away leg of the Worthington Cup first round at Leyton Orient have been reduced. Tickets for next Tuesday's game were originally £15 for Reading fans, but have been reduced £12 for adults and £6 for concessions.

Meanwhile a crowd of near 15,000 is expected for the first home game of the season on Saturday, when Reading take on Swindon at the Madejski Stadium. The East Stand is approaching a sell out, but there are plenty of tickets available for the North and West stands. Swindon Town are also expected to bring a big away following for their first away trip of the season. Both the East and North stands are unreserved seating for the game.

Rougier On Target For T&T

New signing Tony Rougier was in international action for Trinidad and Tobago last night, scoring the first goal in a 6-0 annihilation of Panama in their CONCACAF World Cup Qualifier. T&T now have won all their games so far and look favourite to top their group and progress to the final round which will be played next year. This means that Rougier will be absent from Reading for at least six more international matches over the next year.

Rougier is flying back to England today and should make his home debut in the local derby against Swindon on Saturday.

Martin Butler played the full 90 minutes in last night's reserve game against Norwich, and came through it looking 'fit and strong' in the words of Nicky Hammond. Although this is his first real run out since the shin injury he sustained at the end of last season, the signs are good that he will play some part against Swindon on Saturday.

The reserve game was a 1-1 draw with Keith Scott scoring for Reading.

Forster Out For Season

As speculated on this site yesterday, it has now been confirmed by Alan Pardew that Nicky Forster is suffering from a long-term cruciate ligament injury in his right knee. Forster suffered the injury during the pre-season defeat against Charlton at the Madejski Stadium. Forster limped off during the match, but it didn't look too serious at the time. However, Forster has been unable to recover, and a scan has shown cruciate ligament damage - an injury that puts Forster out of the game for at least the whole of the whole 2000/2001 season. Forster was getting better and better for the Royals last season, after recovering from a major injury, and looked set to make a major impact on the Second Division this time around. Forster has made 44 appearances for the Royals, scoring ten goals, since signing in June 1999. Tony Rougier, signed after the club discovered Forster's fate, has a huge gap to fill but made the right start with a promising performance against Millwall last Saturday.

It was bad enough to discover that Nicky Forster was to miss the first game of the season after limping off injured in the pre-season match against Charlton, however rumour has it that the injury may be much more long term. Reading missed Forster on Saturday, going down 0-2 away at Millwall in the season's opener, but they could be set to be without the player for many months after rumour he broke down in training with what could be a long term injury. The injury is rumoured to be a cruciate problem.

Adding more strength to the rumour was the fairly large money signing on Friday of forward Tony Rougier from Port Vale. Rougier, who made his debut against Millwall on Saturday, signed for 325,000 quid and has scored 21 goals from 170 senior appearances.

Port Vale attacking midfielder Tony Rougier has joined Reading for a fee in the region of £300,000, it has just been announced. Rougier, 29, is a Trinidad and Tobago international and was Vale's top scorer last season despite not being an out-and-out striker.

Rougier will take number 37 and goes straight into the squad for tomorrow's game at Millwall.

Nicky Forster will definitely miss Saturday's league opener after injuring his knee in last week's friendly against Charlton. A scan revealed no serious damage though and he may well be fit for next week's thrashing of Swindon.
Martin Butler and Neil Smith are also said to be 'flying' in training after recent injuries and also look likely to make the squad for the Swindon game.
If Jim McIntyre can shake off a slight leg injury then he should be favourite to start upfront on Saturday but otherwise Pardew is down to the bare bones of Scott, Henderson and Nathan Tyson.

Reserves Draw at Maidenhead

A Reading team comprised mostly of reserve players and triallists fought out a 1-1 draw at Maidenhead United last night. The home side took the lead in the second half but Keith Scott equalized on the hour from a corner.

Included in the Reading team were triallists Winston Griffiths and Micky Longfellow, James Hall (son of agent Eric), Frenchman Abdul Nazri and Sutton forward Scott Forrester. Rather worringly Robert Codner made another appearance in a Reading shirt, but Pardew has promised not to sign him.

Another Win At Kingstonian

Reading's impressive pre-season run continued at Kingstonian tonight as they ran out 3-0 winners at Kingstonian. Darius Henderson gave Reading the lead, scrambling in a Nicky Forster cross ten minutes before the break. Darren Caskey added a second two minutes later, driving home a rebound after Forster's shot was blocked. The third also involved Nicky Forster, who was brought down for a penalty on the hour mark which Caskey converted to cap a comfortable win for the Royals. New academy player Joe Gamble and triallist WInston Griffiths made appearances, while the only downside is a hamstring injury to Keith Jones, who limped off early in the game.

Once again Reading have suffered a serious injury against Saints as Adie Williams has been diagnosed with medial ligament damage to his knee after colliding with Southampton striker Uwe Rosler on Saturday. Adie likely to be out for up to two months, meaning about ten games of the new season.

Mark McGhee, recently appointed as a scout at Coventry, is rumoured to be on the hunt for some Reading players once again. McGhee, famous for coming back to Reading to try to steal players, was present on Saturday when Reading drew 1-1 at the Madejski Stadium in the pre-season friendly game with Southampton. The fat Scot is rumoured to be in the hunt for a striker and could have been taking a closer look at Nicky Forster.

Midfielder Jimmy Crawford has left the club, Reading fc announced today. US-Born Crawford is rumoured to be joining either Cardiff, Bohemians or Glentoran but has not yet fixed himself up with a club. Crawford was one of Burns' early signings but failed to make an impact and has spent most of his Reading career in the reserves. He made 27 appearances for Reading, scoring once - a memorable winner in last season's opener against Bristol City.

It has been confirmed today that Ricky Newman has completed his free transfer signing from Millwall after successfully passing a medical, which had previously held the transfer up. Newman had always been expected to sign after ending last season on loan to the Royals. Millwall paid 500,000 quid for the midfielder in July 1995 when they signed him from Crystal Palace, and he went on to make 150 league appearances for Millwall. Newman made seven appearances for Reading while on loan at the end of last season, scoring one goal.

Caskey Waiting For New Deal

If rumours are to be believed then Reading FC have had an offer for the transfer of Darren Caskey from pretty much every club in the English and Scottish leagues. And every time that offer has been for a million pounds. Unfortunately it's emerging that the latest million pound offer from English First Division club Wimbledon could actually have been offered. Darren Caskey has a year left on his contract at Reading FC, and the club could be tempted to cash in on the player before it's too late and he leaves on a free at the end of the season. There's no doubt that Caskey was player of the season last year, but with concerns that he may not have the same levels of fitness for the new season the offer could prove to be too tempting.

Caskey has asked for a contract extension at Reading FC, but the club so far have failed to offer it. Caskey is probably asking for loads, and although he's sure he's worth it, the club aren't so sure with their current policy of cutting down the wage bill. Rumour has it that the club are going to wait a few weeks before offering a new contract extension - and if they choose not to then Caskey could well be on his way to Wimbledon.

Meanwhile Crawford's move to Cardiff is looking less likely after Pardew failed to release the player for an extended trial at the Welsh club.

Newspaper reports are again suggesting that Reading star midfielder Darren Caskey is on his way to relegted Wimbledon. This would be a bitter pill to swallow for royals fans after fans player of the year Caskey netted 23 times for the club last season. The word seems that Caskey is growing increasingly annoyed at not being offered a new contract by the club and is quoted as saying that if he was offered a new contract he would be happy to pledge his future to the football club.

Royals Win 4-0 At Palace

Reading have won a friendly, behind closed doors, at Crystal Palace 4-0 this afternoon, against a strong Palace side. Reading scored four goals in the second half to secure another convincing, morale boasting win. Both sides played a near first choice team but it was Reading that looked the more likely after Parky put Reading ahead shortly after the half time break. Ten minutes into the second half Igoe made it two-nil, and it was only a few minutes later when Darren Caskey hit the third from a free-kick. McIntyre hit the fourth goal.

Reading have been drawn to play Leyton Orient in the first round of the Worthington Cup, in the draw made this morning. Reading will travel to Orient in the first leg which will be played on Tuesday 22 August (7:45pm kick-off). Royals Beat Torquay With Ease

Reading put in an impressive pre-season performance at Torquay on Saturday to run out deserving 3-0 winners. There were plenty of good signs by a Reading team that consisted of many of the players that'll be in the starting eleven at the start of the new season. Whitehead, who seems set to be the number one for the new season, played in goal behind a strong defence of Polston, Hunter and Adie Williams. Parky was back in action in midfield alongside Caskey, Jones and Hodges.

One of the best signs was the return of Nicky Forster up front, with Henderson and McIntyre, after being out of action mid-week with a slight hamstring injury. Not only did Forster return from injury but he put in plenty of effort, and scored a deserved first half goal which gave the Royals the lead. Jimmy McIntyre made it 2-0 during the second half - firing home at the second attempt. Lee Hodges made it 3-0 right at the end of the match to send the 300 or so travelling Reading fans away happy. Mackie, Evers, and Robinson all made appearances as substitutes. Next up are Southampton at home on Saturday, 3pm kick-off at the Madejski Stadium, which will give everyone the chance to see what Reading are capable of this coming season.

Pompey manager Tony Pullis is all set to offer released reading star Linvoy Primus a contract this weekend after the giant centre back impressesed in the pre season fixtures.
Meanwhile There has been no further news on the Darren Caskey front. It was belived on Wednesday that he had been the subject of two, million pound bids from first division clubs but after this the story seems to have gone flat.

Crawford To Follow Brayson To Cardiff

Jimmy Crawford, another out of favour Tommy Burns signing, is set to follow Paul Brayson and sign for Cardiff City. Crawford has been unable to hold down a first team place in the Reading midfield since signing for Reading from Newcastle for 50,000 quid in March 1998. Like Brayson, Crawford didn't look set to get a look in next season and will be keen to get his career going again by signing on a free transfer. Crawford made 27 appearances for the Royals (including 6 as a substitute) and scored just the one goal.

Gamble Offered Academy Deal

Trialist Joe Gamble is set to join Reading's youth academy after three successful pre-season friendly games for the Royals. Gamble is set to sign a one year contract the club have offered him as an academy player - if he signs he could also feature in the first team squad.

Meanwhile Martin Williams' transfer to Swindon Town is on hold after Swindon withdrew their contract offer while waiting for Williams to recover from an injury. It seems likely the transfer will still go ahead but it may depend on Williams being able to demonstrate he's back to full fitness well before the season kicks off.

Once again the rumour is a million quid, as it always is. This time around it's Wimbledon and Wolves who are rumoured to insterested in putting in a bid for Caskey. It goes without saying that any transfer is possible but it's extremely unlikely the club would let Caskey go for only a million quid.

Madejski Stadium Crossings Complete

Pedestrian crossings on the A33 which runs past the Madejksi Stadium have been completed well on time for the beginning of the new season. The crossings were officially declared complete this week. Reading Football Supporters' Club helped rally support for the crossings and pester the council to get them sorted during the close-season. Fans can now safely cross the dual carriage-way at a number of traffic-lighted crossings along the stretch of road near the stadium.

Royals Draw At Cheltenham

Reading drew 2-2 last night in our first friendly against league opposition at Cheltenham. Reading took a first half lead after Hodges was bought down in the area and McIntyre stuck in the penalty kick. Igoe made it 2-0 to the Royals after the break after Evers provided the cross. After plenty of Cheltenham pressure at the Reading end it was no suprise when they made it 2-1 a few minutes later, and then grabbed the equaliser in the dying minutes to make it 2-2. Once again Reading treated this game more of a kick around than anything serious, and the result was probably fair with Cheltenham unlucky not to win it.

Reading Football Supporters' Club AGM will be held at the Madejski Stadium on Thursday, 10th August at 8pm. Nominations for election to Committee membership are invited. These should be addressed in writing by 27th July to RFSC, 55 Omers Rise, Burghfield Common, Reading RG7 3HH. Each nominee to be proposed and seconded by current RFSC members. The Fans Forum will follow immediately after the formal business of the AGM is completed.

Membership for the 2000/01 season is now open. Membership fee remains at £5 (£2.50 concessions). You can join by post, at the RFC Ticket Office or at The Football Shop on the East Stand concourse or before the Fans Forum. Entry to the Fans Forum will be by 2000/01 membership card.

Weekend Friendlies: A Draw And A Win

Reading kept the pre-season momentum going with a draw and a win during the two friendlies played on Saturday. Darius Henderson will be feeling full of confidence after getting his third goal in two pre-season matches for the Royals. Henderson scored the equaliser at Dulwich Hamlet after Dulwich took a second half lead. Matt Robinson stuck in the winner, making it 2-1 to the Royals, right at the end of the match. The team at Dulwich featured Micky Longfellow in midfield who is on trial at the club. Full team: Whitehead, Brown, Robinson, Viveash, Mackie, Igoe, Jones, Longfellow, Tyson (Gamble), Henderson (Campion), Hodges.

It was a similar story at Didcot with the home side matching the Royals and taking a lead. At Didcot the game ended 1-1, but the bigest concern was the sight of Nicky Forster leaving the pitch injured to be replaced by Academy striker Laidler (who scored the equaliser). Forster is reported to be suffering from a hamstring injury, but, unlike Butler, he is expected to be fit for the start of the new season.

Brayson Completes Move To Cardiff

Paul Brayson completed his transfer to Cardiff City this morning. Brayson, who managed just one goal for the Royals after being signed by Tommy Burns in March 1998, signs a two-year deal at the Welsh club. Brayson signs after a two month loan spell at Cardiff at the end of last season - in which he managed to net one goal. The move is great news for all involved - Brayson needed a move to kick-start his career, Cardiff have a player with some future potential, and the Royals successfully trim down the wage bill. With the emergence of players like Henderson and Tyson at Reading, Brayson would not have got a look in up front next season.

Paul Brayson is still waiting to confirm a move to Cardiff City with rumour that a contract is still yet to be agreed. Brayson spent the last two months of last season at the Welsh club and continues to look for a deal to keep him there. Alan Pardew has spoken out wishing Brayson the best of luck but giving a clear message that there is no room for Brayson at Reading. Twenty-two year-old Brayson, scored just one goal in 18 starts and 30 substitute appearances for the Royals after signing for 100,000 quid in March 1998.

Winning Start In Pre-Season Friendly

Reading kicked off the pre-season build up with a friendly win over an Army XI side at Arborfield Garrison this afternoon. The game was part of Reading's week at the Garrison training with the Army, and a crowd of about 500 saw Reading win 2-0 with two first half goals from Darius Henderson. Reading featured a bizarre side which was a mixture of young players, regular first teamers, the manager, and Nicky Hammond coming off the bench to play out-field. The Royal's next first team friendly fixture is away at league oppostion when Reading face Cheltenham on Tuesday July 18, with a 7.30pm kick-off.

Linvoy Primus, released by Reading last week after failing to agree a new deal, has been undergoing pre-season training with Portsmouth with a view to a permanent move. Manager Tony Pulis is taking a look at Linvoy after failing to land Bradford defender Andy Myers. Reading's build up for the new season is now well underway, with the first team squad back from their summer breaks and in training at Arborfield Garrison. The team are going to be put through their paces with a week's intensive training as a unit with the Army. The week is aimed to build up the team's stamina and fitness - as well as building team spirit. On Wednesday, at the Garrison, Reading will play their first pre-season friendly against an Army XI (3pm kick-off). A limited number of tickets are available, but they must be picked up from the Madejski Stadium before the match - call the ticket office for further details.

Meanwhile it has been confirmed that Reading will play Crystal Palace in a pre-season friendly behind closed doors. The game will take place at Crystal Palace's training ground on Tuesday 25 July.

Linvoy Primus is still having problems finding a new club after his contract at Reading expired last week. After failing to agree a new contract with Reading he's left with nowhere to go with the new season now just a month away. Brentford were rumoured to have offered a contract but terms could not be agreed. Primus is looking to move up a Division or two, but there's no offers currently coming in for the player who admits that "Nothing is happening" You can't blame Primus for wanting to further his career, but at the moment I bet he wishes it was with Reading, who will of course be in Division One this time next year anyway.

Martin Williams has finalised his expected move to inferior Second Division side Swindon Town. Williams, out of the picture at Reading after Forster and Butler have estabilished themselves up front, signs a three year contract at Swindon. Williams made 140 starts for the Royals after joining on a free transfer from Luton Town in 1995. It wont be long before Reading fans see Martin make a return to the Madejski Stadium though - Swindon visit on 19th August for Reading's first home league match of the season.
