Losing Run Ends At Walsall
Added by HNA? on 29/12/03
Reading put an end to their run of three straight league defeats with a much improved performance at Walsall on Sunday. Nicky Shorey become Reading's first player to score a goal in four games when he hit home an excellent free kick midway through the second half to secure the draw. Reading started the game looking much brighter with Owusu making his first start alongside Nicky Forster up-front as the Royals switched to a four man midfield. Owusu had an early shot not far over the crossbar but it was Walsall who took the lead on the half hour mark when Leitao headed home a Simon Osborn corner. Reading enjoyed much the better of the second half and were unlucky not to take the full three points away. Murray nearly equalised for Reading after the break with a close range header before Shorey made it 1-1 with his free-kick that flew into the top corner of the Walsall net. It looked like Reading might win the game when Forster got the ball in the back of the net with ten minutes left to play - but with Reading celebrating the goal was ruled out for offside. This was a much improved showing from the Royals who played some good passing football and showed some determination missing from recent games.

Boxing Day Horror Show
Added by HNA? on 27/12/03
Reading slumped to their third straight 0-3 league defeat on Boxing Day at the Madejski Stadium with an amazingly weak home performance against the side rooted to the bottom of the Division. Wimbledon arrived at the Madejski with just four wins all season but made it five with ease as they swept aside a Reading team that offered little resistance to their superior brand of football. The Milton Keynes based club will almost certainly be playing Division Two football next season but looked a class above a lethagic predictable Reading side. A decent home crowd of 14,500 were given little Christmas cheer and the majority had left the stadium when the third hit the back of the net with ten minutes still to play. Reading were second to the ball all afternoon, seemed to back out of nearly every tackle, lost the midfield entirely and struggled to pass the ball as Wimbledon gave a few simple lessons on how to score goals. The visitors took the lead after nine minutes when Ingirmarsson was beaten and the ball crossed in to be chipped over Hahnemann. Poor defending nearly saw Wimbledon double their lead when Sidwell simply gifted the ball to their striker who hit it just wide. It was only a short let off though and it was 0-2 when the Reading defence disappeared and Murty failed to challenge leaving a free header that beat Hahnemann. In the second half there were few Reading chances and the brief glimmers of hope were very brief - Forster was clean through but put his shot straight at the keeper and Owusu came off the bench to make his debut and hit the post with a header. Wimbledon always looked more dangerous and the third goal was no suprise as the visitors played maybe 10 or 15 passes around the pitch with no challenge before being given three chances to take a final shot to seal the three points.

Kitson Move Confirmed
Added by HNA? on 27/12/03
Dave Kitson's move to Reading has been completed over the Christmas period as expected. Kitson signs from Cambridge United for an initial fee of £150,000 that could rise to as high as £350,000 depending on his appearances for the Royals. Kitson's registration with the Royals will be completed after the trip to Walsall. Since he has already appeared in the FA Cup this season for Cambridge his first appearance for the first team is set to be the home game against Ipswich Town on the 10th of January.

Kitson To Sign From Cambridge
Added by HNA? on 23/12/03
Cambridge United striker Dave Kitson could be set to follow Lloyd Owusu to the Madejski Stadium as Reading look to add further strength to their front line. It was confirmed earlier today that Owusu had joined Reading on a one month loan - but the latest news is that Kitson could also be on his way after United confirmed that they had accepted a bid from Reading for the player. United claim they have accepted an offer this afternoon from the Royals that will be initially be worth £250,000 plus future pay-outs. The move remains subject to Kitson passing a medical and agreeing personal terms with the Royals. Cambridge are claiming that their financial situation left them with no choice but to accept the offer and see one of their key players leave. Kitson has recently been out of action through injury but has still managed to hit eleven goals so far this season for the Third Divsion side. After moving into professional football in March 2001 Kitson has scored 40 league goals for Cambridge in only 97 league starts.

Owusu Seeking Confidence Boost
Added by HNA? on 23/12/03
Reading's new loan player Lloyd Owusu has been allowed to join Reading on a one-month loan spell to increase his confidence according to Sheffield Wednesday boss Chris Turner. Speaking on the official Sheffield Wednesday website Turner stated that Coppell has had a "long-standing interest" in the player after managing him at Second Division Brentford. Owusu has struggled at Wednesday this season and Turner hopes the move to Reading on loan will help the player return to form, describing Owusu as "lacking a bit of confidence at Hillsborough". Owusu, who has found himself relegated to the Wednesday substitutes bench recently, is expected to make his debut on Boxing Day as the Royals face Wimbledon at the Madejski Stadium.

Lloyd Owusu Signed On Loan
Added by HNA? on 23/12/03
Reading have signed Sheffield Wednesday striker Lloyd Owusu on a loan spell to bolster the front line.
The Second Division forward man has hit the net six times for Wednesday so far this season in 26 appearances -
with his last goal coming against non-league Salisbury in the FA Cup back at the start of November.
Owusu is a player well known to Reading manager Steve Coppell - after a long spell with Brentford in which he hit 64
league goals. Brentford originally signed Owusu from Slough Town in 1998 for £25,000.
Owusu signs for an initial loan spell of one month.

Stuffed At Home By Palace
Added by HNA? on 20/12/03
Reading were on the wrong end of another 0-3 score-line this afternoon - this time being well beaten at home by a side near the foot of the table. Crystal Palace were, on this afternoon's performance, a much better side than the Royals. Palace created by far the better chances throughout the whole game and always looked more likely to find the net. The 0-3 defeat fairly reflected Reading's contribution to the game. Reading never looked likely to score and had just one shot in the entire second half when Salako put in a tame effort straight at the keeper. The Royals looked static, slow and predictable with the visitors working the ball around far better to get into dangerous positions. Palace should have gone ahead earlier after putting a shot against the foot of the post but went ahead five minutes before the break when a good move saw the impressive Johnson do well in the area to control the ball and put it under Hahnemann. Shortly afterwards it was 0-2 when Savage lost the ball in the Palace half and a quick break saw the ball crossed behind the Reading defence and stuck home from close range. The same pattern continued after the break with the visitors always looking more likely to extend their lead - Hahnemann made a couple of saves and they put a few wide of the target. Dean Morgan made his Reading debut coming off the bench and looked lively getting in a rare Reading shot. It was the slightest glimmer of hope though and Palace sealed an impressive win in the dying seconds - making it 0-3 after the ball was played forward on another quick attack. Reading were very much second best.

Stuffed At Stoke
Added by HNA? on 14/12/03
Reading were well beaten at Stoke City yesterday after a poor performance resulted in a 0-3 away defeat that saw the Royals drop out of the play-off positions. Reading fell to seventh in the table with Alan Pardew's West Ham United moving up to sixth. Stoke had Dutch midfielder Peter Hoekstra to thank, who scored a hatrick - two goals before half time and a penalty towards the end of the game to kill Reading off. The goals were Hoekstra's first of the season and gave Stoke, who were the better side throughout the game, a deserved win. Reading rarely managed to get a shot in and settled for just a few long range efforts - the home side could have gone ahead earlier then they did but eventually went 1-0 up after 18 minutes. It was 2-0 just six minutes minutes after an impressive strike from the edge of the area beat Hahnemann. Shorey took down Hoekstra in the box with just three minutes of the game remaining and he casually put the penalty away to end a disappointing afternoon for the Royals.

Murty Limps Off For Scotland
Added by HNA? on 11/12/03
Graeme Murty and Scott Murray both appeared for the Scotland Future's side last night during a 1-1 draw with Turkey. Scotland took the lead in the first half, which ended with just 10 players on the pitch for both sides, but Turkey drew level in the second half. Both Reading players were heavily involved after being brought into the squad - but Murty's game finished just before the half time break after suffering a poor challenge from a Turkey player. The foul resulted in a straight red card for the offender but saw Murty forced to sit out the second half with an injury to his ankle. Although the injury doesn't appear to be serious it could well be enough to rule Murty out of Reading's trip to Stoke City this Saturday.

Ticket information has been released for Reading's away fixtures at Walsall in the league (28 December) and the FA Cup Third Round tie against Preston North End (3 January). Reading are not expected to sell out their initial allocations for either fixture but as per usual club policy, tickets will go on sale to season ticket holders first followed by STAR members before general sale. For both games Adult tickets are priced at £16. Meanwhile, tickets are still available from the ticket office for Reading's trip to Stoke City this Saturday. Preston Drawn In The FA Cup
Added by HNA? on 07/12/03
Reading have been drawn away at Preston North End in the Third Round of the FA Cup. The game will take place at Deepdale on Saturday 3rd January 2004, with a 3pm kick-off. Preston are currently just five places behind the Royals in Division One and the game should prove a difficult fixture as Reading start their FA Cup campaign. Earlier this season Reading beat Preston 3-2 at the Madejski Stadium thanks to goals from Goater, Mackie and Forster - the Royals travel to Deepdale again in March for the return league fixture. Last season the Royals went out in the third round after losing on penalties in a home replay against Walsall.

Forster Double Puts Royals Fifth
Added by HNA? on 06/12/03
Two superb individual goals by top scorer Nicky Forster saw Reading climb above Wigan into fifth place in the table his afternoon. Reading's 2-0 victory was the Latics first home defeat of the season so far and Reading's first away win since the 2-1 win over Sheffield United in October. Nicky Forster was involved throughout the game and created and scored the goals when Wigan looked most likely to find the net. Forster had a whole series of chances in the first half after hitting the post in the opening two minutes of the game - he perhaps could have done better with a couple of other chances later on when he failed to find the target. With Wigan starting to look the more likely in the second half but unable to get past a solid Reading defence, Forster latched onto a clearance ten minutes into the half. He beat one defender before outpacing a second as he raced towards goal. The finish was as good as the run as he took it wide and shot past the Wigan keeper to make it 1-0. Wigan went close to pulling level but Forster sealed the victory with a second goal in the dying minutes when he again broke free to beat the keeper after a ball forward from Harper.

Narrow Defeat To Chelsea
Added by HNA? on 03/12/03
Reading suffered a narrow defeat against Premiership leaders Chelsea tonight as they went out of the League Cup in front of a sell out Madejski Stadium crowd. The Royals put in an impressive performance throughout and ended up being defeated by a single goal when Hasselbaink finally found the net for the visitors just before the hour mark. The Royals had Marcus Hahnemann to thank for keeping the score down with a string of excellent saves throughout the game, but should be pleased with a battling performance that saw both sets of fans applaud them off the pitch at full time. Chelsea had the better chances overall but failed to outclass the Royals who had some decent efforts themselves with Savage, Forster, Sidwell and Murray all going close to getting on the scoresheet. The result saw Chelsea claim their seventh consecutive clean sheet, but they came close to losing that sequence after clearing the ball off the line twice during the ninety minutes. The Royals enjoyed plenty of solid possession as they took the game to Chelsea, especially in the second half as they grew in confidence, but Chelsea held firm and always looked dangerous when they came forward. Chelsea had made changes to the side that beat Manchester United at the weekend but fielded a very strong side with Terry, Babayaro, Lampard, Cole, and Crespo all starting - it was a line-up that shows just how well Reading did to hold them to a single goal. Overall it was an impressive result for Reading and an entertaining match that should see Coppell a happy man tonight despite the exit from the competition.

Royals Set For Chelsea Visit
Added by HNA? on 03/12/03
The stage is all set for tonight's sell-out League Cup game against Chelsea at the Madejski Stadium. Chelsea went top of the Premiership at the weekend following their 1-0 home victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. The nation's current top side have enjoyed an amazing recent run that's seen them fail to concede a single goal during the last six games. The last time Chelsea let a goal in was way back in October when they put out Notts County 4-2 in the last round of the competition. Since then Chelsea have won 4-0 away at Lazio and demolished Newcastle 5-0 at home as well as brushing aside last season's champions. It's no surprise then that Chelsea are firm favourites to progress to the quarter finals at the expense of Reading - The Royals are 9/2 for the win with The Blues firm favourites at 8/15. It seems no one expects a Reading win - so Coppell's team can do no wrong as they take on one of the most expensively assembled teams in the world. Chelsea could rest a few of their key players but are still likely to field a very strong side that is expected to include the return of Damien Duff and Joe Cole. Second choice keeper Marco Ambrosio may also step in to replace Carlo Cudicini. Reading are unlikely to make any big changes from Saturday's line-up that beat Watford 2-1 at the Madejski Stadium - although Savage may find himself back on the bench with Scott Murray back in the starting eleven. The game kicks off at 8pm and fans are advised to leave plenty of time to beat the traffic.

Goater Out Until New Year
Added by HNA? on 02/12/03
Reading striker Shaun Goater is expected to be out of action until at least the new year after further examination of his knee injury. Goater has failed to appear since his substitution during Reading's 1-0 home win against Millwall on 15 November, which followed a poor run of form for the player after a bright start to the season. Goater has hit the net five times for the Royals over 19 first team appearances since signing in the summer. His extended injury could give Coppell the opportunity to bring in another striker - although it seems likely that any signing would see a player initially arrive on loan.

Late Sidwell Goal Wins It
Added by HNA? on 30/11/03
A late strike from Steve Sidwell, with just two minutes left to play, won the three points for Reading yesterday after a positive 2-1 home victory over Watford. The Royals looked a much better side than recently against strong away opposition who came do the Madejski after winning at Norwich and holding West Ham to a draw. The return of transfer-listed Kevin Watson in midfield made a big difference to Reading who looked much more attacking and did far better in holding on to the ball and working it forward. John Mackie returned from injury in defence and had an excellent performance, and opinion was split on Bas Savage who played his first full ninety minutes for the first team. Reading just edged the first half after a close battle with Nicky Forster working his way in to produce a couple of shooting chances. The second half saw Forster nearly break through again but was excellently tackled at the last minute by Cox. Moments later Forster was again through with Cox getting the final touch to prod the ball past his own keeper, which saw Forster claim the goal. Reading's lead was shortlived as Watford went straight down the other end and crossed from the right to see the ball volleyed home. As time began to ran out Reading had a period of strong pressure which saw a couple of efforts just wide. A determined spell of play eventually saw Sidwell grab the winner with an excellent volley after Forster played the ball in from the left. The win saw Reading return to sixth place in the table - back in the play-off positions.

Morgan Signing Confirmed
Added by HNA? on 27/11/03
Dean Morgan has signed, as expected, on a short term contract to keep him at Reading until the end of the current season. Twenty-year-old Morgan signs on a free, as he was currently not under contract with any club, after his contract with Colchester was terminated "by mutual consent" earlier this year. Morgan's trial with the Royals featured just a single reserve game, in which he scored the winner, before he was given a contract - hinting that Coppell would like longer to assess the player before renewing his contract or otherwise at the end of the season. Morgan gets mixed reviews from Colchester United fans after 23 league starts and plenty more off the bench. Many were impressed with his skills as a player but he became known for having one too many "off-days". He seems set to start as a squad player and will need to work hard to get a break through into a first team starter. Meanwhile, it is being reported that no money is being made available to Coppell for a significant transfer fee for further players.

Well Beaten At Burnley
Added by HNA? on 25/11/03
After our good run of recent form Reading were swept aside at Burnley tonight after a disappointing ninety minutes from the Royals. Two wins and a draw, at top of the table West Brom, was followed up this evening by a 0-3 reverse at Burnley with Reading second best to a team that started the game eleven places behind in the table. The home side got off to an excellent start and took the lead from a corner after four minutes - the ball was cleared but then crossed back in and headed home at the near post. The Royals spent the rest of the first half trying to get back into the game and enjoyed most of the possession but failed to take their chances with Forster and Salako both wasting opportunities to level. Burnley continued to look dangerous on the break and made the most of some poor Reading defending to add a second just after the break. At 0-2 down Reading were out of the game and Burnley had the best of the second half as Reading fell to pieces. After three straight clean sheets the defence looked out of sorts and Burnley added a third with over half an hour of the game left to kill off a weak Reading challenge.

Dean Morgan Could Sign
Added by HNA? on 25/11/03
Reading could be set to offer trialist Dean Morgan a permanent deal following a successful two week spell with the Royals. Morgan arrived earlier this month and appeared for the reserve side during last Wednesday's 3-2 victory over Colchester United reserves. Morgan played the full ninety minutes and scored the winning goal as he looks to secure himself a new club. Coppell appears keen to sign Morgan despite the strong possibility he wont feature in the first team in the short term - Reading's boss has described Morgan as "an investment for the future". Morgan, currently just 20 years old, signed professional terms with Colchester United in 2000 and went on to make 23 league starts for the side hitting six goals.

Royals Take Point From Hawthorns
Added by HNA? on 23/11/03
Reading took a point from league leaders West Bromwich Albion yesterday to remain just five points off the top of the table. The 0-0 draw saw Albion remain as Division leaders but the home side ended up frustrated after missing a series of chances that probably should have given them the full three points. Reading started brightly and had a decent first half showing with a couple of chances that could have seen a Reading goal. Nicky Forster perhaps should have set up a goal, or even scored himself, but held onto the ball for too long before knocking forward a poor pass deep inside the West Brom area. Murty did well to come forward and hit a decent effort just wide of the left post from the edge of the area and Steve Sidwell claimed Reading's only other shot of the half. West Brom struggled to get their first half shots on target - but their front line was even worse in the second half as they wasted chance after chance to take the lead. Hahnemann had a shaky first half, was improved in the second, but was rarely tested despite West Brom setting up several close range shots. When it would have been easier to score they failed to find the target and blasted the ball high over the bar and headed over in the last few minutes as Reading hung on for an excellent away point. Although The Royals clearly benefited from a large slice of luck they put in another solid team performance to continue our impressive run of recent results.

Rotherham United have shown interest in Reading's transfer listed players Nathan Tyson and Kevin Watson. United, currently just three places off the bottom of the First Division table, are keen to strengthen their squad and are initially looking to take one or both of the players on loan. Watson joined Reading on loan from Rotherham two years ago and went on to sign for the Royals for £150,000 - there seems a good chance that the same may happen in reverse with Watson keen to link up with former boss Ronnie Moore. Tyson is set for another loan spell after rumoured interest from both Rotherham and Plymouth who are pushing for promotion from Division Two.

The last remaining tickets for Reading's league cup clash against Chelsea at the Madejski Stadium will go on general sale tomorrow morning. There are approximately 400 tickets that will be made available for general sale after all the other tickets were purchased by those that had priority (season ticket holders, ticket holders from the last league cup fixture and STAR members). Tickets will be made available to personal callers only to the ticket office which will open at 9am tomorrow morning. Two tickets are available per person - which means if there's already 200 people in the queue when you turn up you're not likely to get a ticket! Fans that haven't been able to get a ticket yet are expected to queue up well before the ticket office opens for their final chance to grab a ticket. The game is a guaranteed sell-out with Chelsea immediately selling their full allocation. The last sell-out game was the play-off semi-final with Wolves last season that generated the Madejski's record crowd of 24,060.

Back In Play-Off Zone
Added by HNA? on 16/11/03
Reading jumped above Alan Pardew's West Ham United to retake a play-off position with a 1-0 home win over Millwall. Reading were good for their win with an excellent team performance that saw them control the game despite Millwall's physical efforts to break The Royals down. Reading got off to the much better start and should have gone ahead after just eight minutes when Nicky Shorey was flattened inside the area for a clear penalty. Andy Hughes found the target with his spot kick but hit it straight at the Millwall goal keeper who made the save. Reading kept up the pressure with some decent football and took the lead on twenty-three minutes when Goater played the ball to Sidwell on the right who crossed to John Salako in the middle. Salako continued his spell of excellent form for Reading with the goal that sealed the victory as he hit it home from the edge of the area. Millwall had a better spell as Reading were happy to defend but Hahnemann was rarely called into action as the whole back four looked top quality keeping the visitors out. Millwall could have drawn level before half time but hit the ball just wide from close range. Goater should have sealed the victory early in the second half with a close range header but put the ball just wide when he should have done better. Millwall went on the hunt for the equaliser later in the game but Reading continued to hold firm and never looked likely to conceed a goal against an average Millwall frontline.

Tyson Joins Watson On Transfer List
Added by HNA? on 10/11/03
Nathan Tyson has joined midfielder Kevin Watson on Reading's transfer list as Steve Coppell continues his shake-up of the side following the signing of Ivar Ingimarsson. News emerged last week that Watson could be on his way from Reading - prompting strong support for the player during Saturday's victory over Wigan after he came on with eight minutes left. Coppell has stated that both players are transfer listed, possibly initially for loans, to enable them to progress their careers. Tyson has failed to establish himself in the Reading first team despite plenty of games last season. So far this season Tyson has made just five appearances - all from the bench and seems to have dropped out of the side completely recently. Tyson is said to be "frustrated" about his lack of involvement and is keen to see if there is a chance for first team football elsewhere.

Royals Beat League Leaders
Added by HNA? on 09/11/03
Reading beat Wigan, who led the Division before kick-off, by a single goal at the Madejski Stadium yesterday as Steve Coppell made it five wins from seven games in charge. The Royals looked a bit sharper than some of the recent games and edged the victory after a close game between the two sides. In a balanced first half Nicky Forster had a couple of chances to put Reading ahead, while Wigan struggled to find the target at the other end despite breaking through a couple of times. Reading defended well throughout with Murty having a great game back from injury - Williams limped off during the first half but Newman came off the bench to put in an excellent performance alongside the superb Ingimarsson. The introduction of Bas Savage saw the Wigan defence finally show signs of weakness and Reading scored when Savage drew a couple of defenders allowing Andy Hughes to head home from Salako's free-kick. The goal saw Reading begin to take the upper hand as they threatened to extend the lead. The game was already won for Reading before some last minute drama. With time up the Wigan keeper was sent off after being judged, by the linesman, to have handled the ball as he raced out of his area to stop Forster breaking through. It wasn't the most entertaining game but it was a solid Reading performance and three vital points to lift us back into the top ten.

Royals Drop To Eleventh
Added by HNA? on 01/11/03
Reading dropped to eleventh in the First Division table this afternoon after a 0-1 away defeat at Crewe. Reading's second defeat in three league fixtures came after the Royals spent most of the game looking for an equaliser after the home side took the lead with the only goal of the game on 15 minutes. Crewe, already unbeaten in four games before today, got off to a fast start and could have gone ahead in the opening few minutes with Hahnemann seeing a lot of the action. Crewe's pressure paid off when they found the net from close range and a tight angle after beating Reading's offside trap. It could have been 0-2 later in the half after a powerful long range effort was saved by Hahnemann. Just before half time Reading started to get into the game with Forster seeing a goal-bound effort blocked and Forster's involvement continued after the break when the Crewe keeper saved a shot from the edge of the area. Reading had the majority of the ball in the second half but couldn't convert possession to goals as they wasted a series of chances to draw level. Murray could twice have scored and Goater saw a header go just wide after coming off the bench as Reading threw players forward. The Royals saw a number of efforts fly high or wide as Crewe defended solidly to hold out for the win.

Royals Through To Round Four
Added by HNA? on 29/10/03
Reading went through to the fourth round of the league cup last night after a 1-0 home victory over Huddersfield Town. Reading were much the better side throughout but needed a late goal from Nicky Forster to take the win with just seven minutes remaining. Forster scored after a second half of solid Reading pressure when he headed home an Andy Hughes cross. Reading were frustrated in a below average first half with the visitors putting in an excellent defensive performance to close Reading down. Huddersfield created few chances of their own and the second half saw Reading begin to make the breakthrough with a series of chances before the eventual winner. Hughes nearly scored as he narrowly missed a Shorey cross as he slid in and Williams nearly scored with a volley from a corner.

Steve Death
Added by HNA? on 28/10/03
A minute silence will be held tonight at the Madejski Stadium, before kick-off against Huddersfield Town, in honour of Steve Death who passed away on Sunday. Steve will remain in the record books for his unbeaten league record of 1103 minutes without conceeding a goal while playing for the Royals. Steve was first choice goalkeeper throughout the 1970s after signing in 1969 and went on to make 537 starts for Reading. If you were lucky enough to have seen Steve Death play for the Royals then please send in your messages - perhaps of your favourite moments of his superb Reading career - and we'll collect them together for an article on this website.

Royals Frustrate United To Win
Added by HNA? on 25/10/03
Steve Coppell claimed his first away victory - at the first attempt - as the Royals frustrated Sheffield United with an excellent defensive performance to win 2-1 last night. After a poor performance against Walsall earlier in the week Reading bounced back with an all round impressive team showing to make it 3 wins from 4 for Coppell. The home side had a chance to go top of the table but instead Reading moved up to eighth - just three points behind United. The game got off to a frantic start with Reading taking the lead after seven minutes when Shorey's corner from the left was headed firmly home by Adrian Williams. United pulled level just three minutes later when Harper failed to block a cross and it was slid home at the far post. Sheffield United enjoyed most of the possession for the rest of the game but struggled to find a way through. The Royals grabbed a half time lead, against the run of play, with a quick break - Hahnemann played the ball out to Shorey who passed to Forster. Forster ran at the defence before firing in a superb shot from well outside the area that flew into the top corner of the net to make it 2-1 to the Royals. Reading's defence held firm throughout the second half to earn Reading the win with Ingimarsson making an excellent debut in the centre of defence alongside man of the match Adrian Williams.

Ivar Ingimarsson Signs
Added by HNA? on 23/10/03
Ivar Ingimarsson has completed his move to Reading Football Club this morning in a deal that could be worth up to £175,000 to Wolves. The Iceland international moves to the Royals for an initial payment of £100,000 with additional money to be paid based on appearances. The midfielder has appeared for his country this season but not for the Wolves first team after an extended loan period with Brighton last season. Under Reading boss Steve Coppell Ivar made 15 league appearances with the Seagulls. Ingimarsson has spent most of his football career to date with Brentford after signing for £200,000 in November 1999 - he made over 100 league starts for The Bees. Reading are set to announce the move this afternoon however the deal was reported to have been completed this morning.

Coppell Suffers First Defeat
Added by HNA? on 22/10/03
Steve Coppell suffered his first defeat as Reading manager last night as The Royals failed to impress in front of the lowest crowd of the season. Just 11,225 fans turned up to watch Reading go behind after only four minutes to a free kick, which saw Hahnemann stranded. The goal was enough to give Walsall their first away win of the season as Reading struggled to ever really get playing as a team. The visitors could have increased their lead before Reading found any kind of pattern - ex-Royal Simon Osborn tried a lob from the edge of the area with Hahnemann off his line that nearly dipped in. Nicky Forster came closest in the first half when Sidwell played him through and Forster hit narrowly wide of the Walsall post. After a very poor first half Reading were marginally improved in the second half but still not good enough. Harper failed to provide much service from midfield and it was left to Sidwell to try and work the ball forward as Reading attempted to get back into the game. Forster had a couple of chances to level but failed to take them as he saw a shot saved from close range and headed over the bar after Goater set him up. Reading went all out attack in the final ten minutes with Tyson, Savage, Forster and Goater all on the pitch - but Walsall defended with ease as time ran out.

Royals Bounce Back To Win
Added by HNA? on 18/10/03
Reading twice came from behind, and scored two late goals, to beat ten man Preston North End 3-2 at the Madejski Stadium this afternoon. The visitors took the lead after twenty minutes when Hahnemann should have stopped a tame shot at the Reading goal, but failed to get down, and saw the ball roll in under his body. The Royals pulled level before the break when Preston conceeded a penalty, which also saw them reduced to ten men for a second booking. Goater hit the post with the penalty, after earlier hitting the crossbar from open play, but was lucky to get a second chance when the referee judged the keeper to have moved. His second penalty attempt found the bottom corner and made it 1-1 at the break. Despite playing with only ten men Preston had a good spell of play in the second half and moved ahead when Sidwell took down a player in the area and the penalty was driven home into the same bottom corner. The appearance of Savage off the bench saw Reading finish the game as the much stronger side. Murray nearly scored twice as he burst through only to find the post in his way both times. John Mackie, having a very determined game after coming in for the missing Brown, pulled Reading level with eight minutes left on the clock when he met a Salako cross with an excellent header. With the game in injury time Preston were put under a solid spell of pressure, which eventually saw Reading grab the late winner when Salako crossed again and Forster put it into the back of the net.

Late Sidwell Goal Steals It
Added by HNA? on 15/10/03
Steve Coppell started his Reading manangement with a home victory last night but saw his Royals side frequently look second best to Gillingham - who probably deserved to have taken at least a point. The visitors could well have gone in ahead at half time after three good chances. After a quick start Gillingham broke and nearly scored within the opening minute but saw a low shot come out off the foot of Hahnemann's post. Later in the half they broke free and should have done better but headed tamely over. Just before the half time break they were clean through again but volleyed the ball high over the crossbar. Reading were restricted to just a few chances and struggled to get their game together with Gillingham enjoying most of the play. The Royals started the second half brighter and played some good football which eventually saw them take the lead when Shorey crossed and Murray headed home at the far post. With just over 15 mintues left to play Hahnemann showed some poor goal keeping as he hesitated when he came out of his area to gift Gillingham with an open goal to equalise. The game looked to be heading for a draw but with five minutes left on the clock Sidwell scuffed a shot from the middle of the area and the Gillingham keeper seemed misplaced as he failed to make the save.

No Big Changes As Coppell Arrives
Added by HNA? on 09/10/03
New manager Steve Coppell, who signed a contract to keep him at Reading Football Club until the end of the 2004/2005 season, has promised to keep on the existing back-room staff. The news means that Kevin Dillon is likely to continue his previous role, and will assist Coppell with the coaching of the first team. Although there's certain to be some changes within the squad as Coppell shapes his team, his appointment should mean a minimum level of distruption inside the club and he gets the club back on track. Coppell hinted at his reasons for taking so long to accept Reading's offer stating he was sad to leave Brighton and saying: "I am excited by the prospect of taking Reading forward, but anxious about the responsibility". Coppell knows the huge expectation from the fans at Reading Football Club, particularly after the bright start to the season under Pardew, and called for patience over the next few games. Coppell set his target to get Reading into the Premiership saying we have the stadium and the facilities all in place for promotion. Good luck in your new job Steve!

Coppell Confirmed As New Boss
Added by HNA? on 09/10/03
Steve Coppell will, at last, be revealed as the new manager of Reading Football Club today on a three year contract. The appointment will officially take place this morning with a press conference held by the club scheduled for 10:30am - confirming the news we've all known for the last week or two. Coppell leaves Brighton after taking the club to the top of the Second Division after relegation from the First Division last season. After a year and two days at Brighton Coppell led the team to 18 wins and 17 draws from 49 matches. Brighton went out of the league cup by just a single goal at Middlebrough but have gone five games unbeaten in the league. Reading fans will be hoping that Coppell can bring his current form to Reading to halt our current poor run. Coppell's first game in charge of Reading will be the home game against Gillingham on Tuesday 14 October.

Coppell - Still No News!
Added by HNA? on 08/10/03
Reading appear no closer to finally securing the services of Steve Coppell, as the saga drags on. This Friday is a full month since Alan Pardew offered his resignation - seven games have passed since then and Reading remain without a manager as Kevin Dillon continues his caretaker duties. The Royals were hoping to confirm Coppell's appointment last week, and after failing to agree terms were then expecting Coppell to agree the revised conditions early this week instead. The latest rumour is that Reading had to cancel plans for Coppell to sign his contract today as negotiations between Reading, Brighton and Coppell continue. The delay has left the club without any public excuses and has seen them fail to commit to a deadline for the appointment of the new manager. Coppell still remains favourite for the job but no one seems to know when it will finally all be resolved.

Coppell Set To Accept
Added by HNA? on 06/10/03
Steve Coppell is set to become Reading's new team manager, after negotiations for extended terms and conditions over the weekend and Monday. Coppell was reported to have turned down Reading's offer on Friday when the Royals were confident in announcing Coppell's arrival. His initial refusal left Reading with no option but to delay the confirmation and extend their offer in line with his demands. The new deal is expected to result in the two sides finally agreeing terms - confirmation is expected during Tuesday or Wednesday that Coppell is Reading's new boss. Brighton recorded a 3-0 home win against Blackpool on Saturday to go top of the Second Division - but their excellent run of form may not be enough to keep Coppell on the coast.

Bradford Hold Royals To Draw
Added by HNA? on 05/10/03
Bradford City held Reading to a 2-2 draw at the Madejski Stadium yesterday despite Reading having the better of the match. In an up and down game for the Royals we started strongly and took an early lead when Forster played the ball in for Goater who did well to hold off his defender and set up Sidwell to score. Reading then dominated most of the remainder of the half, playing some good football to earn a series of corners in a long period of sustained pressure. Unfortunately Reading failed to make their chances count and just before the half time break Bradford scored the equaliser when Goater lost the ball on the edge of the area. The second half saw Reading look more nervous and static as passes started to fail to find targets. With Reading drifting away Bradford were allowed to run the full length of the pitch and score a quick breakaway goal to take the lead. The goal got Reading back into action again and we pulled back level at 2-2 when a Shorey free-kick got a touch off Hughes and found the back of the net. Reading then did plenty to nearly win the game and had three shots cleared off the line in the last few minutes as the visitors held on under pressure.

Announcement Expected Monday
Added by HNA? on 03/10/03
Reading are expected to announce news of the new team manager next week after failing to come to a resolution by today as planned. Favourite for the job Steve Coppell will take charge of Brighton's game tomorrow as he takes the weekend to continue negotiations and come to a decision about his future. Speaking last night to confirm he remains with Brighton for now he gave
his strongest indiction yet that he'll shortly be on his way to Reading: "It would be disrespectful of me to do anything other than give my full concentration to the team when I am here [Brighton]. We’ve had a good run and I want that run to finish on a high." With Kevin Dillon away this weekend due to family matters, reserve team manager Brian McDermott and Director of Football Nicky Hammond will take charge of the team as they face Bradford City at the Madejski Stadium. After promising an appointment this week, and plastering adverts to get people to part with their money to find out the news, on their official website the club have gone strangely quiet. The delay suggests that it all hinges on Coppell with the Royals having to sit tight and wait for his final decision.

Coppell Weighs Up Move
Added by HNA? on 02/10/03
With Reading running out of time to make an appointment of a new team manager this week, Steve Coppell is weighing up his options after a reported offer from the Royals. When asked about his possible move to Reading Coppell refused to deny he could be set to walk out on Brighton - fueling speculation further. Talking to the official Brighton website, Coppell stated that he was still Brighton manager and was preparing his squad for Saturday's game. However, he failed to confirm that he would continue as Brighton boss saying "I'd prefer not to make definative statements". Coppell clearly hasn't made a decision as he negotiates both with Reading and his existing club, who have said they will do their best to hang on to their manager. Reading are hinting that the appointment may now not be made before Saturday's game against Bradford City. Coppell remains favourite for the job but there remains other candidates who could find themselves Reading's next manager.

Steve Coppell Favourite For Job
Added by HNA? on 02/10/03
Brighton manager Steve Coppell has emerged as firm favourite to become Reading's new boss, and could be named manager in time for Saturday's home game against Bradford City. Following a series of interviews during this week it is being reported that Reading have offered Coppell the position - leaving the former Crystal Palace and Brentford manager to decide if he wishes to leave Brighton. Reading went through the formal process of approaching Brighton to speak to their manager with Coppell's contract allowing him to speak to clubs in a higher division. Brighton have confirmed the interviews took place but have stated they wish to keep him if they can: "Albion chairman Dick Knight is today doing everything within his power to persuade Coppell that his future lies with the Seagulls." Brighton, after relegation last season under Coppell, currently lie second in the table as they attempt promotion back to the First Division. Meanwhile, it is being reported that Glen Hoddle has not been interviewed for the job. Tony Adams, Bryan Robson and Steve Cotterill all remain linked with the job but appear to be second choice behind Coppell.
