Alex McCarthy looks set to be given an extended run as first choice keeper for the Royals, after making his first start of the season in Sunday's 1-3 home defeat to Spurs. McCarthy made a couple of decent saves, but also had a couple of nervous moments, after stepping into the side to replace previous number one Adam Federici. McCarthy may have let three goals in, which he's bound to be disappointed about, but could do little to prevent it with Spurs looking a class above Reading.
It was McCarthy's first action for Reading since an extended run in the first team in the 2010/2011 Championship season when he impressed. Meanwhile, the official line on Federici is that he has a minor knee injury that is keeping him out of the side. Reading boss Brian McDermott has already ruled Federici out of next weekend's trip to West Brom in the Premier League saying that the player needs a week or two of recovery time. With Federici apparantly out of action, and McDermott fairly continuing to pick players in good form, it gives McCarthy the perfect opportunity to retain his place for the rest of the season.
