The race for automatic
promotion from the Second Division this season became a three horse race with
plenty of the season left to run. Reading had the hardest job of making up ground
to win an automatic promotion spot - but looked like they'd managed to do it
with three games left as they moved clear into second place in the table. Reading's
run of form couldn't keep up though - and a draw against Walsall followed by
a defeat at Colchester United was enough to end the automatic promotion dream.
Rotherham recovered from their defeat against Millwall to draw and then launch
a fantastic run of wins to reclaim their second place from the Royals.
