Striking Partnerships...
Strap, I recall the legendary strike force of recent years - Quinn/Lovell and Senior/Bremner. Now I know that the Quinn/Lovell partnership bagged 60 goals in that championship season, but I cannot remember the stats of the Senior/Bremner partnership! A question here: What are their overall number of games and goals every time they played together and what's the ratio?!! That should get you going! :-)Chris, we've got to remember that Trev and Mad Max were only paired for 2 seasons, the first of which Mad Max was crocked for a good part, and the second we were in a higher league, ie Div 2. I think we should actually be giving due defference to Dean Horrix, who died in a car crash shortly after he left us back in 86. He and Trevor spent 3 very successful seasons as our front pairing, from 83-84 to 85-86. It's worth comparing the records of these two pairings and you'll see what I mean.cheers
Chris Bennett
To start, I'll just summarise the apps and goals of some key players for the four seasons, I'll stick with league games only as it's fairest for all!
1983/84 games goals Senior 45 36 Crown 45 7 Sanchez 45 10 Horrix 43 8 Beavon 32+4 7 1984/85 Horrix 40+3 19 Senior 31 22 Sanchez 15 2 (ever present then sold to Wimbledon for peanuts - good old Branfoot!) Crown 42+1 7 Beavon 45+1 2 1985/86 Senior 46 27 Bremner 18+4 7 Horrix 38+3 6 Beavon 44 3 1986/87 Senior 42 17 Bremner 42 14 Beavon 41+1 3Couple of interesting points here before we go onto your query, notice the part played by Stuart Beavon in all this? Virtually ever present for the four years of Trevor's reign! Also, Trevor never made a sub league appearance in his first stay with us! Can't confirm whether he ever got asked to sit on the bench and was never called on, but I'm sure someone can tell us.
Anyway, back to the question.
Taking each pair in turn, games played where both players played in the same match are shown below, together with the total number of goals scored as a pair when playing together. (I've included subs as an appearance). Senior/Horrix 1983/84 43 games 43 goals (1 goal per 1 game) 1984/85 28 games 32 goals (1 goal per 0.88 game!) 1985/86 41 games 32 goals (1 goal per 1.28 games) Total 112 games 107 goals (1 goal per 1.05 games) ie a goal was scored by one or other of the pair every 1.05 games that they played in together. Obviously Trevor was the "senior" partner (pun intended!) but it's still an impressive record against their respective individual totals for the 3 years, which were :
Senior 122 games 85 goals Horrix 121+6 games 33 goals Senior/Bremner 1985/86 22 games 18 goals (1 goal per 1.22 games) 1986/87 42 games 31 goals (1 goal per 1.35 games) Total 64 games 49 goals (1 goal per 1.31 games)ie a goal was scored by one or other of the pair every 1.31 games that they played in together. Obviously Trevor was the "senior" partner again, but again it's still an impressive record against their respective individual totals for the 2 years, which were :
Senior 88 games 44 goals Horrix 60+4 games 21 goals
Now Quinn and Lovell are a different kettle of fish altogether! It's true that they had a great year in 1993-94, but their record since is shite! Keeping the same format, their overall league performances can be summarised as :
1992-93 Quinn 42 games 17 goals Lovell 18+4 games 8 goals 1993-94 (Will we ever forget it!) Quinn 46 games 35 goals Lovell 43+2 games 20 goals 1994-95 Quinn 31+4 games 5 goals Lovell 25+5 games 11 goals 1995-96 Quinn 28+7 games 7 goals Lovell 20+15 games 11 goals 1996-97 Quinn 10+14 games 3 goals Lovell 17+9 games 5 goals
Again games played where both players played in the same match are shown below, together with the total number of goals scored as a pair when playing together. (I've included subs as an appearance, but not where one of the pair replaes the other during a match).
Quinn/Lovell 1992/93 20 games 18 goals (1 goal per 1.11 games) 1993/94 45 games 55 goals (1 goal per 0.82 game) 1994/95 22 games 10 goals 1995/96 22 games 9 goals 1996/97 8 games 3 goals Total 117 games 95 goals (1 goal per 1.23 games)So on average, Quinn and Lovell were a better strike force than Senior and Bremner, and both pairs were bettered by Senior and Horrix! Now who would have thought that!
Still, Quinn and Archie can lay claim to the best individual season, the 1993/94 Championship winning year!
I'm actually looking at a few more combinations, namely Kerry Dixon and Pat Earles, Kerry Dixon and Neil Webb, Les Chappell and Gordon Cumming, and of course The King and Percy! I'll bore you with that another day, but initial searching tends to favour Senior/Horrix for the best average, and Quinn/Lovell the best one season record! Still can't quite believe that!
