Button Arrival Confirmed

09 August 2023
By Hob Nob Anyone?

Reading have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper David Button who arrives on a free transfer having left Championship club West Bromwich Albion. Thirty four year old Button comes with mixed reviews but there is no doubting his experience in a career that saw his first appearances out on loan at Grays Athletic while on Tottenham's books in 2008. Button has played for 17 different clubs, mostly out on loan from Spurs before a move to Brentford where he came their number 1 in 2013.

He impressed at Brentford to earn a two million pound transfer to Fulham three years later. In the summer of 2018 Brighton paid four million pounds for Button but he went on to make just four League appearances for the side over two years. Button joined West Brom three years ago but only made 24 league appearances - including 13 last season in the Championship. Button could shortly be Reading's third goalkeeper to make a start after Boyce-Clarke playing in our League Cup victory and Bouzanis was in goal for Reading's opening day defeat at home against Peterborough. Button has signed a two year contract with the Royals.

Jury is very much out on this one. Lets wait and see.

Should be decent for L1, should be able to command the box and organise those in front of him and that really can only breed confidence into the otherwise creaky defence. However might take a while to persuade some supporters. Free transfer on a 2 year deal.

Uproar on twatter as you would expect.

Bit of a Meh, with a big fat eyebrow raised at our previous keeper recruitment and lack of faith in Academy keepers (other than CBC)

Not according to West Brom fans who keep harping on about how they celebrated him catching a corner once like a goal. Hilarious….

I’m not going to poo poo it until he’s actually crap for us, until then, welcome to Reading!

West Brom fans aren't the brightest. I would rather see him for myself and judge, thanks.

He has played very little first team football since his Brentford and Fulham days.
The management can't think much of the keepers already on our books.

Not sure how much better he is than our current options but I won't write him off before he's kicked a ball.

He looks a bit like Tyson Fury in that top picture.

The last bald, bearded keeper we signed on a free turned out ok.

I guess the only thing for me is that al habsi had 150+ apps in the 5 years before we signed him and Button has only had 40 ish.

I mean, we've cheered a last minute keeper catch at a corner before, because it dispels the threat of conceding a late goal, I bet that's what it was.

Not had a good run of games for a few years so might need a bit of time to get up to speed. We do like an erratic keeper.

Really hope he does well just to show up all the idiots writing him off. Seems like an experienced keeper who has lost form for a couple of years. No reason why he can't succeed here.

Everybody wrote off Lumley when he came in last year too by listening to boro fans, he did well in a difficult season apart from the horror show at Rotherham.

Mentioned on another thread but there was a story going round that we were after an experienced keeper who would likely be happy as a #2, as the hope was to give one of the younger keepers a run. Button would fit that mould esp as he hasn't played regularly for years and as his family stayed in the south when he went to WBA, means he can be at home again.

They were definitely saying it like he’s so shit it was a surprise.

No one’s really writing him off on here? Just people saying a bit meh, but they’ll support him.

Not the most exciting signing but what do fans realistically expect? He's ok, he'll do.

Hope this doesn't mean CBC is loaned out again as I'd like to see him get more games for us. Rather we loan Anderssen out again instead.

I'd be happy for CBC to be loaned out, a number on here have already expressed doubts about CBC based on the games he had played before Millwall. Personally I'd rather he got vital experience and made mistakes elsewhere than behind an already insecure and leaky defence.

I see you're sensible enough not to venture onto Twitter. Very wise.

As we now have a highly experienced goalkeeping coach as our assistant manager, I'm sure they've done their homework on Button.

The same fans that thought Bowen was "cooking" when it looked like we were signing Pereira.

 From Despair To Where?

» 09 Aug 2023 15:54

If the coaching staff felt we needed another keeper then I'm far happier with Button than Pereira. At least he's done a bit more than half a season in the SPL where, by his own admission, he was shit.

Would be very believable if we'd given Andresson any game time.

Aye. Not being impressed with the signing doesn’t mean you don’t then rate him by how he does on the pitch.

We did in pre-season, maybe the decision has been made and its CBC.

Reasonably pleased really, seems like a pretty sensible move all round on paper anyway. Had an opportunity to regain some form here and provide some experience for the younger lads as well. If we are wanting to build from the back, he seems suited to that as well.

Still gives us a good opportunity to pave a way for CBC or Andresson as well in the next 12 months or so.

WBA fans glad to see the back of him, some even rate him as their worst ever keeper as well as the usual "couldn't catch a cold" comments. Hope he proves otherwise, he surely has to be better than the 3 currently vying for the #1 otherwise there's be no point in signing him.
