Goalkeeper Nyland Signs Until End Of Season

Reading have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Orjan Nyland who arrives to replace Arsenal loan keeper Karl Hein who has returned to his club after injury.
Nyland arrives on a short term contract until the end of the season after leaving Bournemouth earlier this year. He made 3 appearances for the Cherries this season - one game in each of the League Cup, FA Cup and Championship. His first appearance of the season saw him conceede six times away at Premier League Norwich City. Despite limited domestic football, Nyland has played four World Cup qualifiers this season for Norway, keeping two clean sheets in the process.
Nyland's previous clubs include Aston Villa where he spent two and a half years and made 28 league starts for the club. However he found opportunities limited after the end of the 2019/2020 season and played just once for Villa in the 2020/2021 season.

Experience in the Premier League, Championship, Bundesliga and in European football. 33 caps for Norway including being the #1 for the last 5 WC qualifiers.
Would struggle to find a better keeper available as a free agent at this stage of a season. Could be a very shrewd signing (or total crap).

Do agree with this but it also leaves me wondering how players like this end up without a club. How has he not really been an option for anyone? He's played eight league games in nearly three years (and six times for Norway in that period).
Listening to the interview, he got an injury fairly early on in the season but was #2 behind Travers for most of it. Bournemough signed Woodman at the end of the window, so he moved on to try and get 1st team football somewhere else. Was #2 at Norwich last year as well.
Has still been training at Bournemouth, so should be no concern about fitness. Potential to be a really good signing and if all works out, could well be a player who is here next year too.

Should fit right in with the rest of the squad as has had a calf injury which is why he was let go by Bournemouth in January. Presuming he is now over that of course otherwise I’m sure the club wouldn’t have signed him.
Has made 1 league appearance in 2 years.

Hein must be the most bizarre signing we have ever made
Far from it. The goalkeeping coaches I've spoken to about him all said he was a decent keeper and better than Southwood. In my own opinion he played pretty well in the few games he had with us and seemed to inspire more confidence in his team mates.
Just because someone is 'one of our own' doesn't mean they are ready/right for our current situation. It will be great if Southwood comes really good for us either now or in a future season but he may well end up being one of those promising keepers who struggles to make an impression at the higher levels of the game.
And for an objective comparison take a look at the goals conceded and points gained over the five games Hein played and compare to goals conceded and points gained over Southwood's last five games!
