Royals Fail To Shine At Sunderland

Reading failed to shine at Sunderland's Stadium of Light yesterday as they were beaten 0-2 in front of the Sky TV cameras. Reading got off to the stronger start but Sunderland rapidly took control of the game as the first half progressed. Despite playing five men in midfield we continually hoofed hopeful balls forward in an attempt to release Forster. Sunderland played the more cultured football and deserved the lead they took on 28 minutes when a long shot from the left, which might have been intended as a cross, flew into the back of the net. Five minutes later it was 0-2 when the ball was crossed from the left and headed home inside the box. The second half saw Reading attempt to get back into the game by bringing on Goater up front and starting to play the ball around to work forward, however the Royals were easily contained by the home side. Reading's defeat was Dillon's third from four league games since taking over team management on a caretaker basis - and could see the job offered to another applicant this week. The Royals dropped to tenth in the table.

Oxford Well Beaten In Cup

Reading cruised through to round three of the League Cup last night with a convincing 3-1 victory over Oxford United. It was the first time the two sides had met at Oxford's new ground and the Royals were a class above the home side in front of 9,870 fans. The result never really looked in doubt with the Royals hardly letting Oxford touch the ball in the first half. It took until seven minutes into the second half for Reading to finally make their possession count when a Forster shot came back to Salako who made it 1-0. Forster, who caused the Oxford defence problems all night, cut through a series of players on the edge of the box for an excellent solo goal to double the lead. United pulled a goal back with a decent move that cut through the Reading defence for their first real effort on goal - the header gave Hahnemann no chance. Reading sealed the win just before the start of injury time when substitute Daley beat Robinson down the right and crossed to Forster who cut it back for Harper to score from close range. A much improved Reading performance that should leave Dillon a very happy man.

Hammond Promoted

Royals Academy Director Nicky Hammond has been promoted to Reading Football Club's "Directory of Football". The role, popular at other clubs, is a newly created position for the Royals and does not replace the team manager role. Hammond will continue to oversee the Academy but will have additional responsibilities that include, according to the club, "all football matters other than first team and reserve team coaching and team selection". Hammond's promotion is aimed at continued stability at the club and rewards Hammond with a five year deal after three years heading up the Academy. Kevin Dillon remains as caretaker team manager for the short term with no decision being made, as yet, to the permanent choice.

Second Defeat For Dillon

Kevin Dillon's third game in charge of the Royals ended with his second defeat as Reading were outplayed by a Coventry City side that won the game without really doing anything that special. The Royals struggled all afternoon to make the most of home advantage and looked a dis-organised side short of ideas against stronger opposition. City had the first real chance of the game when they broke through the defence to lob the ball onto the crossbar with Hahnemann beaten - the rebound was blasted over the bar. However, it wasn't all one way traffic and Reading might have done enough to win the game in the opening half an hour. Reading took the lead on 21 minutes when Forster broke through and kept onside to fire the ball across the keeper from the right and into the far corner of the net. The Royals could then have gone two goals up when a cross found Goater in an excellent position to score - but his shot was straight at the goalkeeper. Moments later City drew level with a corner from the left to the near post. The Reading defence seemed frozen and the ball was stuck home from close range. The visitors then dominated the second half and it seemed just a matter of time before they found the winner. Chance after chance found the Reading defence in a real mess and eventually saw a break on the right and a long range shot from the edge of the area that gave Coventry the three points.

Small Allocation For Norwich

Reading have been given an allocation of just 270 tickets for the trip to Carrow Road as Reading take on Norwich on Tuesday 30 September. Tickets go on sale to season ticket holders, and are sure to sell out straight away, on 23 September - a week before the game. Adult tickets are available at £15. Official Statement - Don't Panic!

Following this afternoon's confirmation that Alan Pardew will become the new West Ham United manager one month from today, the club released an "official statement" on their "official website". The statement confirmed that Pardew's contract will end on 18th October - when he will officially join West Ham and that Reading will receive compensation of £380,000 for the early termination of Pardew's contract. The statement continued to say: "...we have been given an undertaking by both Alan and West Ham United that Reading Football Club employees will be leaving before to join West Ham before the end of the season." That's a direct quote from the official site. We can only assume that someone got a bit excited at the club while typing that in. We'd like to think that the Royals have been given a promise that Pardew will NOT take any players or staff of the Royals with him! Assuming Madejski didn't sign that version of the agreement, today's resolutions in London bring an end to this sorry chapter. Pardew has gone - until he returns on 3rd April 2004 with West Ham United to the Madejski Stadium. Now there's a game to look forward to!

One Month Exit Agreed For Pardew

Following an appearance in court this afternoon between Reading Football Club and Alan Pardew it has been agreed that Pardew will be free to leave the Royals one month from today. The agreement means that Pardew will officially become West Ham United manager on 18 October 2003. As part of the deal West Ham will pay compensation of £380,000 to the Royals - plus court costs. The resolution will be seen as a success all round after the last week - Reading get significant compensation and prevent Pardew from going straight to West Ham, while the Hammers get the manager of their choice after a wait of a month. Pardew is reported to be "delighted" with the outcome.

Royals Take Legal Action On Pardew

Reading Football Club started the legal process today to stop Alan Pardew joining West Ham United as team manager. Pardew remains under contract to Reading Football Club and Madejski is seeking an injunction, through the courts, to prevent Pardew being employed by a competing club. The move seems likely to extend the time before Pardew's contact is finally terminated - and will almost certainly block Pardew joining West Ham during the coming weeks. Although the court could make a quick decision it seems more likely that it could drag on before a decision is made either way about Pardew being able to join the Hammers. West Ham are still unable to agree a deal with Pardew due to his contract with the Royals which specifies he can not talk to clubs outside the Premiership. A statement released by West Ham this afternoon concluded: "West Ham United are not party to the proceedings so are unable to comment further." The legal actions could force West Ham to seek an alternative to Pardew unless existing caretaker manager Trevor Brooking is willing to continue the role for an extended period.

Victory Over Cardiff City

Reading picked up three points last night after an entertaining victory over Cardiff City at the Madejski Stadium. The Royals started brightly with Nicky Forster off to a lively start, twice cutting in from the left and getting a shot in on target. However Cardiff City also made a good start and followed it up by taking the lead on 12 minutes when Shorey was caught out with a cross from the left which found Thorne unmarked. Cardiff looked the better side throughout the rest of the first half with some excellent passing moves, while Reading struggled to hold onto the ball. The second half was a very different affair as Reading dominated the rest of the game. City nearly extended their lead after the break with a shot rising into the top of the net that was well saved by Hahnemann - but after that it was all one way traffic. Reading's passing came together and we moved forward well to create two excellent goals. We drew level just after the hour after a great move saw the ball come lose to Murray on the right. Murray drove the ball towards goal and Forster flicked it on into the back of the net. Sidwell had already threatened with two long range power shots - one just inchces wide of the post - and the winner came from that method - a shot from the edge of the box that flew into the back of the net to make it 2-1. The win, Dillon's first as Reading manager, was a well deserved win from a much improved second half performance. Reading climb the Division One table to fifth place.

Royals Defeated At Upton Park

Kevin Dillon's first game in charge of the Royals was marked by a 0-1 defeat at Upton Park today at the hands of West Ham United. The game had massive billing after the events of the past week, but the "Pardew Affair" was soon forgotten as the game got underway with both sides looking for promotion points. West Ham were quick to impose their superiority on the game with Reading looking sluggish for the opening twenty minutes. Reading struggled to hold onto the ball and West Ham enjoyed the best of the play as they threatened to run riot. They could have been a couple ahead early on after hitting the post and forcing a save from Hahnemann. Reading's defence was struggling to contain the attack and the Hammers took a deserved lead on 17 minutes when a corner from the left was headed firmly into the back of the Reading net. After going behind Reading gradually got more and more into the game and looked a much improved side in the second half. Reading had the vast majority of the ball and moved it around well but lacked any real bite up front. Despite our domination in terms of possession West Ham continued to look the most dangerous side and Reading's man of the match Marcus Hahnemann needed to pull off a string of excellent saves to keep Reading in the game. The Royals had a few opportunities but failed to really test David James in the West Ham goal. Reading couldn't be faulted for effort but the home side held on with ease in the end and were good for their win.

Hammers To Look Elsewhere

With Alan Pardew remaining unavailable for employment, West Ham may have to find another candidate to take change of their side. Pardew could be set to lose the opportunity to manage West Ham - or any side - for the time being, as he remains under contract to Reading after Madejski refused his resignation. West Ham caretaker manager Trevor Brooking, spoke out again today to state: "It was always going to be the case that we would have to look elsewhere if the situation drags on indefinitely." Brooking's comments suggest that West Ham may move on and forget about Pardew as they strike off his name and move down their short list. West Ham continue to deny that they had any agreement with Pardew before he resigned. The Hammers insist that Pardew quit without any confirmation that there would be job for him to go to at West Ham. When Pardew's contract at Reading is eventually terminated he may find himself unemployed. Brooking takes charge of West Ham tomorrow with Kevin Dillon in charge for the Royals as the two managerless teams meet at Upton Park. The sold-out fixture is sure to generate massive media interest with three points for either side set to confirm their place as strong promotion contenders.

Reading caretaker manager Kevin Dillon has said the team are well prepared for the league trip to Upton Park this Saturday as Reading take on West Ham United. The game is now sold out with an intense atmosphere expected as the two managerless sides continue their promotion campaigns. The Royals are one of just two unbeaten sides in the Division as they look to go top of the table by continuing their excellent run of form. West Ham are four places behind Reading and will be looking for some home goals after finding the net just five times in the league so far this season. Speaking to the BBC today, Dillon said the players "are really fired up and they were flying in training." Dillon is clearly relishing the chance to take control of the team after playing such a big part over the past two seasons under Pardew's command. We may owe Dillon a lot for our recent success under Pardew. Dillon stated that it was a "natural progression" for him to move into the managers job after successful spells with the academy and reserve sides. The Royals caretaker boss confirmed that he hasn't spoken to Pardew since he offered his resignation, and made it clear he won't be following Pardew to West Ham or anywhere else. Unlike Pardew, Dillon is staying put to help Reading continue to climb up the football pyramid. Reading's travelling fans are certain to show plenty of support for Dillon on Saturday. Another Reading victory could be on the cards.

West Ham Deny Poaching Pardew

West Ham spoke out today to blame Reading Football Club for making it public knowledge that they wanted Pardew as their new manager. The League Managers Association published an article on their website to demand an inquiry about West Ham United's actions in encouraging Pardew to breach his contract and offer his resignation from Reading. Madejski twice turned down official approaches from West Ham to talk to Pardew - but in the end Pardew resigned from Reading with the belief that the West Ham job was his. Under his contract Pardew was only allowed to talk to West Ham with full permission from the board of Reading Football Club. West Ham have officially blamed John Madejski for releasing the information on the Royals official website - therefore making it public and informing Pardew of West Ham's interest. However, Trevor Brooking spoke out on the radio to confirm that Pardew was "top of the list" before Pardew's resignation offer. It's a messy situation that could get messier before it's resolved. Pardew remains under contract to Reading despite his resignation - meaning he will be unable to take the West Ham job until compensation is agreed. If Madejski chooses he could well drag the matter into court, which would force the Hammers to find a different new manager and leave Pardew without a job. Meanwhile, Kevin Dillon has said that he is keen to keep the manager's job on a full time basis after being appointed caretaker manager for the trip to West Ham. Dillon can certainly offer stability to the club and a continuation of our pattern of play. A victory for Reading at West Ham on Saturday will put Dillon as clear favourite to take the job at this early stage.

Madejski Rejects Pardew Resignation

Reading chairman John Madejski has rejected Alan Pardew's resignation. Although, Pardew has clearly "left his post" as manager of the club, Madesjki may make it hard for Pardew to move directly into the vacant manager's position at West Ham. Pardew's exit from the Royals looks like it could be a drawn out and messy affair and could leave West Ham without a manager for longer than expected - or even force the Hammers to look elsewhere. Pardew used his exit from the club to wish the players and fans the best of luck, concluding: "I would like to thank the fans for their support over the last six years and genuinely wish them all the success they deserve." Pardew confirmed he will not be present, in any position, at Saturday's fixture at Upton Park between Reading and West Ham. Kevin Dillon is expected to take over as caretaker manager of the Royals and will take charge of the trip to West Ham. Pardew will be remembered as a very successful manager with the Royals - but a manager that broke his contract - and his recent words - to chase a bigger pay cheque. A disappointing end to a successful Reading career. Pardew officially took over as manager of the first team in October 1999 and dragged Reading from the foot of the Second Division to the First Division play-off finals last season. Pardew leaves with Reading in second place in Division One - our highest ever position in the history of the club. After signing his full contract as Reading boss he managed the Royals to 102 wins from 212 games - an impressive record. A sad day for Reading Football Club and Alan Pardew.

Alan Pardew has, this morning, resigned as manager of Reading Football Club. In a short statement after a morning meeting with Reading chairman John Madejski, Pardew effectively confirmed he has left to take the West Ham job: "My main issue has always been the opportunity to speak to West Ham United Football Club which has been denied to me." Currently Hob Nob Anyone? does not feel in the position to wish Pardew luck.

News is expected today on the future of Alan Pardew as manager of Reading Football Club. A number of reports suggest that Pardew is on the verge of resigning to accept the position of manager of West Ham United. It is being reported that Pardew is to meet with John Madejski this morning to discuss his position as Reading manager - the outcome of the meeting could be the news we've been waiting for. Madejski may offer revised terms and conditions to encourage Pardew to stay or Pardew could resign on the basis of a huge offer from West Ham. Although the exact details of Pardew's existing contract is not public knowledge it is thought that a move to West Ham would at least double his current salary. How Madejski will react is not known - nor do we know what Pardew's thoughts are as he considers his future. However, it may all become very clear very shortly.

Firstly, Reading fan Edgar Morse has sent in a piece on the current situation regarding Alan Pardew and his future at Reading Football Club. He questions the speculation surrounding Pardew and has a look at the success during Pardew's time in charge of the Royals. Also, we've finally got round to putting up the fans forum summary notes from August. The forum saw fans put a series of questions to Royals boss Alan Pardew. When questioned about what annoyed him about being at Reading he stated "nothing" and that he loved it at the club. Pardew - Who Knows?

There's still no end to the rumours of Alan Pardew's potential exit from Reading to West Ham United as their new manager. Reading Football Club have refused West Ham the official route to discuss terms with Pardew. That wasn't the end of the matter as Reading fans would have hoped - or is it? Pardew's agent spoke out about his disappointment at not being able to discuss the vacant Hammers' job fueling speculation of his interest in making the move. Several papers over the weekend claimed that a deal was already in place and Pardew would be on his way today. There's still no word from Pardew himself, but the official line - for now at least - remains that Pardew is staying put. Pardew is, in his own words from last week, happy to stay with Reading and complete the job of taking us into the Premiership. However, his agent has done plenty to hint that Pardew will be talking to West Ham regardless of Madejski's feelings and that could mean the end of Pardew's time at Reading. If West Ham take Pardew, and break his contract with the Royals, then they'll be forced to pay between £250,000 and £800,000 in compensation to Reading - but Madejski would clearly prefer to hang on to his manager, who remains the club's best asset. Meanwhile a number of other names remain in the pot for the Hammers' job - but Pardew still tops the list as favourite. We could find out the results of all this speculation today with West Ham hoping to have a new manager in place in time for Saturday. Let's hope Pardew speaks out to end the matter and confirm that he's staying with Reading. Time will tell, with one of the two clubs involved certain to make some kind of statement today or early this week.

Sidwell Goes Close For England

Reading's Steve Sidwell made another start for the England Under-21 side last night as they drew 1-1 against Macedonia in Skopje. Sidwell, becoming a regular feature of the Under-21 midfield, nearly found the target at the end of the first half as England enjoyed the majority of the possession. Sidwell hit an excellent effort from outside the Macedonia penalty area and saw his shot narrowly wide of the post. Earlier in the half England had gone ahead when Phil Jagielka found the target. The second half saw an improvement from the home side but it took a mistake from Kirkland, in goal for England, to gift them the equaliser. England struggled to create many chances and were forced to settle for a disappointing draw.

Madejski Blocks West Ham

Reading chairman has blocked West Ham in their attempts to sign Alan Pardew as their next manager. The Hammers made an official approach this morning to ask permission to discuss a contract with Pardew - but John Madesjki declined the contact. In a short statement released by the club, Madejski's official response to the potential move was a single word: no. Although this could be seen as an end to the saga, Pardew's agent has followed this up by stating that Pardew was keen to talk to West Ham to see what they would offer. For now Pardew remains contracted to Reading Football Club and West Ham can take no action if they keep to official channels. Pardew, we're sure, will be concentrating on preparing the team for next Saturday's trip to Upton Park and getting the three points.

Hammers To Make Official Approach

It is being reported this morning that West Ham United are to make an official approach to open talks with Alan Pardew regarding their vacant manager's position. Pardew has already spoken out to claim that he hasn't "got the job" and hasn't formally discussed a move to the club. However, this latest twist in the never-ending flow of rumours seems to suggest that West Ham haven't given up on the manager they think will be best for the job. Pardew remains one of the favourites despite his recent denials, and comments from both Pardew and Madejski that he is staying put with the Royals. Four strong contenders for the job have emerged that include Paul Hart (Nottingham Forest manager), Brighton's Steve Coppell, care-taker manager Trevor Brooking and Pardew. Pardew would no doubt be perfect for the West Ham job but he should know that'll he'll be far better off staying at Reading. Although he may be honoured by all the recent attention to his excellent managerial career to date, we're confident that Pardew will be staying with the Royals.

Pardew Denies Rumours - Again

Reading manager Alan Pardew has once again denied any link between himself and the vacant manager's job at West Ham United. Speculation has been growing for a number of days with Pardew becoming the bookmakers favourite to take the job. Some bookmakers suspended bets on Pardew taking the job with rumours quickly spreading this morning that an offer had been made. One West Ham fan site stated that Pardew was set to accept an offer from the Hammers and that Pardew was as good as on his way to the club. With various unfounded stories floating around, Pardew has spoken out this afternoon to say that he definately has not signed a contract with West Ham. Pardew denied that he was interested in the job earlier this week stating that he expected to stay with the Royals for a "very long time". Despite Pardew's denials about his interest in the job it seems he will continue to be linked with the position until an appointment has been made. Further rumours have suggested that West Ham may be in a position to confirm the new manager as early as tomorrow. Alongside Pardew, other favourites include Bryan Robson, Stuart Pearce, Paul Hart and Trevor Brooking.

Butler Move Completed

Martin Butler has completed his move to Rotherham after agreeing personal terms with the club. Reading and Rotherham agreed the transfer last week but the deal was not completed in full until the weekend. Butler is now officially a Rotherham player and stated his reason for the move being to secure a first team place. The arrival of Goater at Reading had forced Butler to the sidelines. His last appearance for the Royals was against his new club when he came off the bench during the 0-0 draw last Monday. Good luck with your new club Martin.

Saturday's Game Postponed

Reading's home tie against Walsall, that was due to take place this Saturday (6 September), has been called-off due to three Reading players being called up for international duty. Makes a pleasant change having the Royals forced to call off a game for this reason! The game has been called off following the confirmation that Steve Sidwell will feature in the England Under 21 squad. Williams and Daley have also been selected by their countries.

Royals Go Second

Reading regained second place in the First Division table - the highest position in the club's entire history - with a straight forward victory over Wimbledon on Saturday. In a near empty Selhurst Park, in front of just over 2,000 fans, the Royals were the better team against a home side lacking in ideas. The 3-0 victory for the Royals may have been harsh on Wimbledon but Reading made the better chances - and took them, to continue the unbeaten start to the season. Goater put Reading ahead from a Hughes cross on 12 minutes, and Hughes made it 2-0 after the half time break. Goater sealed the three points with his second of the game on the hour mark with a close range effort that made it 3-0.

Butler Set For Rotherham Switch

Reading striker Martin Butler is set to transfer to Division One side Rotherham United. The Millers and the Royals have agreed a deal for the player with the transfer fee set at £150,000. However personal terms are yet to be agreed between Rotherham and Butler. Butler is rumoured to be looking for a wage outside Rotherham's budget and discussions are continuing with the player, through his agent, to complete the deal. Butler has had recent first team chances seriously limited at Reading, but he appeared as a substitute on Monday as Reading drew 0-0 with Rotherham at the Madejski Stadium. The Royals signed Butler from Cambridge United for £750,000 in February 2000 and he went on to have a very successful first season (2000/2001) - netting 28 times. Since then Butler has struggled to regain his form but still managed to hit 32 goals in 85 league starts for the Royals. The deal is likely to be completed with Butler willing to take a wage cut to gain regular first team football.

West Ham Tickets On Sale Thursday

Tickets for Reading's visit to West Ham United on Saturday 13 September go on sale Thursday morning from the Madejski Stadium ticket office. Managerless West Ham haven't made the best start to the season and Reading will be hoping for victory at Upton Park - Reading's allocation of tickets, just over 2,500, are likely to sell out well in advance. Tickets go on sale to season ticket holders only with two tickets per person and then go on sale to STAR members the following Monday. Any remaining tickets go on sale the following day. Adult tickets will sell for £22.

Pardew Talks Down West Ham Link

Reading manager Alan Pardew has talked down a possible move to fill the vacant manager's position at West Ham United. Pardew, the best manager in football outside the Premiership, is certain to be linked with any available job in the top two Divisions with his recent success with the Royals. The victory at Derby took Reading to their highest ever league standing in the history of the club - and Pardew took over when the Royals were struggling at the foot of the Second Division. Pardew, who has a clause in his contract that would allow him to talk with other clubs about a move, shrugged off the rumours and stated he's keen to stay with Reading. Reading fans should take heart that as it currently stands there should be little to attract Pardew to West Ham when he already has the manager's job at Reading - a club well above the Hammers in the league and with a much brighter outlook. It seems highly unlikely that Pardew would move when Reading are on the brink of such great things unless a very high standing Premiership club were to make an offer. In the meantime, Reading fans should show Pardew just how appreciative they are of his recent work at Reading.

No Goals In Rotherham Game

Reading struggled to find a way past Rotherham United at the Madejski Stadium this afternoon as the two teams played out a 0-0 draw in front of the Sky TV cameras. The result saw Reading continue their unbeaten start to the season but the Royals will be disappointed at their inability to find the back of the net. Reading got off to a good start and looked likely to be on their way to the three points when Steve Sidwell forced an early save from the Rotherham keeper after an excellent Reading move. Reading continued to look the most likely team with a decent opening period - TV replays later showed that we should have won a penalty on twenty minutes when Forster was taken down in the area. Nicky Shorey put in a great shot from distance that curved all the way as it flew just over the crossbar with keeper otherwise beaten. At half time Reading had enjoyed four shots with no reply from Rotherham - and the pattern continued throughout the second half with the visitors restricting Reading to long-range efforts. The Royals struggled to increase the tempo of the game and started to rely on long balls that reaped little result. Tyson was introduced as Reading changed to a 4-5-1 formation, and then Butler and Daley came off the bench as Reading changed tactics again. Reading certainly had the most of an un-exciting 0-0 draw but Rotherham deserve credit for a strong display against the Royals who have had no problem hitting the target so far this season. Rotherham safely held on and even threatened to take the points themselves with Hahnemann needing to make a save in the closing minutes of the game.

Royals Win At Derby To Go Second

Reading's excellent start to the season continued on Saturday with a 3-2 away victory at Derby County that took us into second position in the table. Last season Reading struggled at Derby on the opening day of the season and ended up going down to a 0-3 scoreline - but a year later Reading were clearly the better side. The game got off to a frantic start with the Royals taking the lead in the opening three minutes when Goater scored his second ever Reading goal at the far post from a Forster cross. The home side pulled level just a couple of minutes later after Ricky Newman conceeded a penalty. Derby threatened to take the lead with a shot that hit the crossbar, but it was Reading that started to enjoy the better of the opening half. The Royals were soon ahead when Murray broke into the area after playing a short corner to make it 2-1. It was Murray that scored his second of the game just six minutes later, from a Sidwell pass, to give Reading a 3-1 half time lead. The home side set up a nervous finish for Reading after pulling one back with nine minutes to play - but the Royals held out for their second league win of the season.

Magnificent Royals Crush Forest

A truly magnificent 2nd half performance from the Rs saw Forest crushed 3-0 after a good first 45 minutes had seen a Nicky Shorey penalty saved and a Shaun Goater goal ruled out as offside. Forest held their own for the first 30 minutes until Kevin Watson was brought on for an out of sorts John Salako. This proved to be an inspired substitution by Alan Pardew as the Royals totally dominated a decent Forest team with some breathtaking passing and movement much of it flowing from Watson. Steve Sidwell scored his 3rd goal in three games with a fierce drive from 35 yards following a corner.1-0.This was followed by a great run and shot from Scott Murray.2-0.Then "the Goat" madeit 3! Watson,Murray and Sidwell outstanding.

Late Goals Beat Boston

Late strikes from Steve Sidwell(83) and Nicky Forster(87) saw Reading through to the 2nd round of the Carling Cup away at Boston Utd. The Royals had gone ahead in the first half through Forster only to concede a penalty after 59 minutes for Boston to level it at 1-1. Final score 1-3.

Omar Daley Signs

22 year old Jamaican international Omar Daley signed a one year loan deal today subject to the grant of a work permit. Daley, an attacking midfielder who can play in the centre or on either flank has 21 full caps was the target of Charlton last year but they were unable to get a work permit at that time. It is understood that this is not likely to be a problem now given the number of caps he now has.

Royals Robbed At Ipswich

The Rs were robbed of all three points at Ipswich on saturday when a Jim Magilton dive in the box in the 94th minute earned a penalty for Ipswich which was converted by Kenny Miller to give the Tractorboys an undeserved equaliser after Steve Sidwell had put the Royals ahead in the 59th minute. A frustrating afternoon also saw Nicky Shorey given a very dubious red card.

Tonight's pre-season friendly at Bournemouth ended in a 0-0 draw in an unexciting game between two first choice sides. The home side marginally had the better of the first half with Reading coming close to taking the lead in the second half, without managing to find the back of the net. The game is the second to last first team scheduled friendly - with the pre-season campaign ending with the visit of Southampton on the 1st of August. Reading will send a mixed reserve and first team squad to Didcot Town tomorrow night (Wednesday) - kick-off is 7.30pm at Didcot's Loop Meadow Stadium. Tonight's starting eleven included Murty, Harper, Watson, Murray and Nicky Forster.

Royals End Swedish Trip With Draw

Reading ended their trip to Sweden with a 1-1 draw against IK Brage last night - but needed a late goal from Darius Henderson to draw level. In an aggressive fixture Brown, Hughes and Forster all picked up yellow cards with the home side apparantly playing the game like a competitive fixture. The game saw the return of Nicky Forster from injury, which will be a big bonus to the Reading side as they prepare for the start of the new season. Forster played 55 minutes, and although he didn't have a great game and missed a couple of clear cut chances, it was encouraging to have him back in the hooped shirt. Murty also played a short spell during the second half after replacing Brown in the Reading defence. The Royals went behind on 55 minutes, but should have probably gone in at half time behind after struggling in all departments. Henderson and Tyson combined again for Reading's goal with a Henderson cross seeing Tyson hit the post and Henderson finish off the rebound.

Shaun Goater May Sign

It is being reported that Manchester City have accepted a bid from Reading for striker Shaun Goater. Details of the bid are currently unknown but Manchester City have confirmed that Pardew placed the bid on Tuesday - and that it is the first bid they have accepted for the player. The player is yet to discuss a possible move to Reading - but the reports indicate that the two clubs have agreed the move with personal terms remaining to be arranged. It's not clear if Goater would be interested in a move to the Royals. Goater has had an impressive spell at Manchester City after signing for £400,000 in March 1998 - he's hit 85 league goals in 167 league starts. Before his move to City, Goater played for Bristol City for a year and a half scoring 43 goals in 69 league starts. Goater is currently on tour with City in Denmark and is unlikely to agree any terms until he returns at the weekend.

Victory In Sweden

Reading started their tour of Sweden tonight with a 3-1 victory over Gefle IF. The game was the first time that a near first choice Reading side had played a full fixture since the end of last season with a strong Reading line-up. The games against Brentford saw a mix of players on display but tonight there were only a few key players missing. The Royals started with Hahnemann in goal and the three centre backs of Mackie, Williams and Brown. Shorey, Watson, Murray, Sidwell and Tyson made up a five man midfield with Butler and Henderson up front. Substitutions later in the game saw appearances from Hughes, Harper, Salako and Newman. Reading took the lead after thirty minutes when a Hendrerson header was saved leaving Nathan Tyson will a straight forward finish, and it was Tyson who put Reading 2-0 up before half time with another close range effort. In the second half Tyson and Henderson combined again when Tyson crossed and Darius scored from deep inside the area to make it 3-0. The home side pulled a goal back right at the end from an impressive long range free-kick that flew in giving Hahnemann little chance. Reading's second, and final, game in Sweden sees the Royals travel to Borlange on Thursday.

Royals Beat Brentford In Return Game

Reading made the strange decision to field a stronger side in this morning's return fixture at Bradfield College against Brentford. The Royals lost out 2-3 to Brentford at Griffin Park last night with Reading fans paying ten pounds to see an essentially reserve/academy line-up. This morning's return game was organised to give players who didn't feature last night the chance to get a game - however it was played behind closed doors as Reading strolled to a 3-0 victory.
Reading's scorers in today's win were Nicky Shorey, Andy Hughes and Andre Fashanu. The Reading line-up included first teamers Shorey, Brown, Mackie, Harper, Hughes, Salako, and Butler. Jamie Young played in goal for Reading and Andre Boucaud played an impressive full ninety minutes.

Royals Lose In Pre-Season Kick-Off

Reading started their pre-season campaign with a 2-3 defeat at Division Two side Brentford tonight. The Royals lost out at Griffin Park despite taking a two goal lead within the opening ten minutes. A Reading side that was a mix between first teamers, fringe players, and academy players took an early lead when new signing Scott Murray found the back of the net. Murray, making his first appearance in a Reading shirt scored from a Ricky Newman cross after just five minutes. Reading's lead was doubled on ten minutes when Middleton crossed and Henderson connected to send the ball into the path of Nathan Tyson, who made no mistake from close range. Tyson could have extended Reading's lead before Brentford pulled one back just after twenty minutes with a long range shot that flew into the top corner. Brentford seemed to enjoy a revival after a shaky start and drew level before the half time break with a shot from the edge of the Reading area. The second half saw a large number of substitutions from Reading and saw Brenford grab the winner with about five minutes left to play. Brentford are due to visit the Madejski Stadium tomorrow in a return reserve fixture to be played behind closed doors.

Murray Completes Move

Scott Murray has today completed his move to Reading Football Club after agreeing personal terms last night. The move is worth up to £650,000 for Second Division Bristol City. With the players now all back from holiday and into pre-season training, Murray's completed move to the Royals could signal the start of the completion of a couple of other rumoured moves that may include Wimbledon's David Connolly and Liverpool player Richie Partridge.
